People breed their dog, for whatever reason.. First litter, & they are at YA asking ' how do I know she's pregnant ' ? ' how do I know she's in labour ' ? & questions related to breeding, & whelping, raising the puppies etc. So it is apparent that they have done no research at all, & waited til the final moment to try to find out what they should be doing. This also suggests that they don't have a breeder or a mentor that they are working with.

So when the puppies are ready to go, since they know absolutely nothing at all from breeding to whelping, to worming, & vaccinations, when the puppies should go to homes.. How is it that they are grading their litter ?? Not even grading in regards to show/pet .. How are they deciding which puppies should go to which homes, offering help to buyers? & which people that come to buy a puppy, should or shouldn't even own a dog ? Are they any better than the petstore if they are just selling to the first person that comes along with cash ??

They, as in those that bred their female... If they have no knowledge about anything from breeding to whelping.. How can they possibly be of any help to perspective buyers?? Can't figure out how to breed your dog, surely you know nothing about which puppy is going to grow up to be alpha etc...

Hey, I am liking these answers.. I thought I would hear from a bunch of people trying to defend their right to breed and do what they please no matter what the outcome! I don't understand these people not learning, not wanting to learn til the very last second.. I mean I spend I don't even know how much time learning and reading and the desire to know about everything to be able to help my puppy people out is huge! I want to be there for them, to have the answer, to be the person that they can rely on and ask for help.. I don't want to be the breeder that says ' i don't know ' I might not know, but I WILL find out for you! I don't understand their unconcern about their lack of knowledge..

They don't. Personally I would like to see everyone do a PAT (Puppy Apptitude Test) like Volhard before letting pups go. I have no problem with people taking reservations for a litter on a first come, first serve basis if the buyers are qualitied to properly care for a dog. However, I don't think people should just pick their own pup based on the cute factor. Personally, I don't think anyone who doesn't know much about canine behavior should pick their own pup or dog. That's why shelters have so many dogs turned in with behavior problems. Someone got what they felt was the cutest puppy and it turns out that it is really dominant so they couldn't handle it. Or they got a submissive coward when they wanted a guard dog. Or my personal favorite, they picked an independant puppy that grew into an independant dog that wanted nothing to do with them so now it's off to the shelter with that one so they have room for a new pup that wants to play with them. Which brings me to the other thing that really gets to me. Why do people breed when they aren't willing to take back any pup/dog no matter how old it is? How can anyone sleep at night knowing that a dog they brought into this world isn't sitting at the shelter on death row? I have my contract set up so that any dog can come back to me for any reason no matter how old it is. If I bring it into this world then it is my responsibility until it leaves this world. Just my opinion and I'm sure I'll be ripped a new one for it. Oh well. Noone can say I won't stand up for what I believe in!

Well I have answered so many questions where the person who has a dog ready to whelp and didn't have a clue that sometimes I just want to scream. These people who do this kinds of breeding are just in it for some extra cash and don't have a flipping clue as to what to do when something goes wrong or Even how to help stimulate a pup right after it is born. So why should they even care about the temperament of the pups or where each pup stands within the litter. There they still have no clue.
I agree with DP in every point and observation he has made but it will not stop the dog owner from letting their dam get pregnant or to let the dog breed too young. Nor will it stop people from allowing their pups to be taken away from the litter too young.
The difference between the home breeder and the pro is light years apart.
I'll bet that here in a very short time there will be another person asking the same question and I will be trying to give an answer to the best of my ability in a way they can understand whats going on with their dam.
Ohhh my. Such is the life on Yahoo's Q&A's.

NO they are not better then petstores and most of the time these people do not even have the pups vet checked or get any vaccinations for the pups. God forbid something goes wrong during whelping because spending money on the dog is a no-no.
They do not care. As far as they are concerned their dog is just a money making machine. They want your cash, for you to take the pup home (as early as possible) and they do not want to hear from you again.

I have to agree with you, people really need to get their dogs fixed, they often sneak off and breed with mutts and the owners still try to make a profit. There are people that live by me who's dogs "accidentally" bred once (They are Pit X Karelian Bear Dog, brother and sister) and now the person breeds them constantly. Producing 3 or more litters a year of INBRED puppies. Disgusting..

Behavior...
I think this is DP's point - these people know absolutely nothing about breeding or genetics (or even pregnancy. gestation, and birth) much less vetting the pups, grading them, deciding which should be restricted, evaluating the personality, merits & faults of each individual pup; so how in the world can they be considered "responsible" breeders, working to maintain and improve the breed standard? They aren't.
Good question.
Are they any better than the petstore? No.

I agree with you 100%! People need to think ahead before they breed their dog. Alot do it and have no clue whats going on. Some cant even have pups natural but they dont care. The pups and the moms end up dying. "THEY" need to research before breeding and let the breeding up to the pros.

I dont know, People just need to spay em, spray em, and give it some food and stop breeding an contributing to puppy mills.

It costs so much to become a professional breeder and people try to copy when they dont know what thier getting into. But people really need to start adopting animals from the shelter, and stop contributing to eutahanization. Besides, all these breeder wannabees just end up giving their dogs up becuase no one wants thier sssccchnooooodlllpuggleeezuuugiiigggllleee mutt.

Who is the "they" you are talking about? Usually puppies that are graded are done so by people who know something about puppies.

like it or not dogs are considered property and owners can pretty much do what they want...right or wrong. It's very sad.
