While I believe we are empty of inherent existence, labels are still needed to identify among certain peer groups for reasons of education, socializing etc. We do exist, just not inherently... so it's logical that labels have to exist to a degree... it's the attachments and aversions to them that cause the problems.

For me, having a label isn't important or necessary part of my identity. Much of the struggle in my life has been because I as a person don't fit any label too well. I used to think that this made me "bad" and "odd" and "wrong".

Though a lot of soul suffering trial and error I came out the other side. I've got a lot of battle scars but I have won the right to ditch the labels.

Indeed, once I came to this distinction I began to find a lot of joy in bursting people's bubbles as to what label I fall under. Just when they're sure I belong "here" I say or do something, still true to me, that makes them say "huh?"

We need words for things. I guess that's what makes titles important for me. While I don't think having a one word identifier is important or realistic to knowing myself, a certain conciseness is usefull to getting a ballpark figure when dealing with my life's pace. Other people can't sit around all day while I lecture about the intricacies of my beliefs. It's convenient. You might be going somewhere with this, though, with someone who isn't very thoughtful and simply grabs onto ballpark words to attain 'beliefs'.

My concept of self - it's not important per say...It's not something I feel the need to preserve. It's just something I find true. I'm me. I'm an I. It's not important. It's just fundamentally basic.

I believe it's important when one is trying to convey a certain meaning without being too detailed about it. It is tied to self as it lends a basic meaning so others can understand. I don't need a label in order to view myself... I know myself. But in order for another person to understand things about myself, I need to use labels.

Labels are important in order for others to know who I am... but only if they are interested.

It is very important to have an individual concept of "self". But labels do not make me an individual... it only explains a small part of me.

Labels are there so that other people can make sense of what they see, I think.
And
Labels are also there so that people can feel part of a larger group, I have understood.
I personally dislike a label, and I have learnt over time, the people who don't need a label or have a label, are so much more interesting.
I hope to be that confident and would prefer to know more about a person than to attach a label.

okay, you laid a loaded one on us.I consider for me that I am a christian. I am not closeminded about whatever a person believes in if it helps him or her. I do not care if anyone knows what I am. I don't ram my beliefs down anyone elses throat so don't do it to me. I feel good and confident most of the time who I am. It is important for me to listen to others and what they have to say cause maybe it is helping that person out. Sometimes we don't even have to say a word but be there only for a sounding board. My self is to be as good a friend to others and do the best I can in being a good human being. Thank-you for the question.

1: Labeling is a natural part of human psychology. It is how our brains process (ideals) concepts, of self, of products/services and of course others. Is it necessary, I think so, if it is our choice to identify who or what we are.

2: It is as important as the brand names of products on the market. Which would you prefer, Lamborghini or Kia. By the label/brand, you know exactly the quality inclusive to the brand. It should then be our objective to market ourself accordingly , based on the quality of the Self Concept.

Thanks for the thought-ful question.

A label is of no interest to "me". It has no meaning, though labels may be useful in categorising viewpoints on an intellectual level.

A label is something that others appear to like for the above reason (categorising).

Some people view 'self' as illusory. In which case it is perhaps more important to be ridding oneself of such a concept. As for me, "I" really don't know. *chuckles*

i do no longer think of that my labels are needed, yet i think of they seem to be a good rapid and grimy way of conveying to strangers the place i'm coming from and what prejudices i'm probably to have. i can declare that i'm a vegetarian/ pacifist/ agnostic/ grad pupil/ scientist/ liberal/ married woman and you will possibly be able to make extremely some assumptions approximately me ideal away, probably greater maximum suitable than no longer. It factors a framework to flesh out later if we save chatting with one yet another. To me this is had to have a man or woman theory of self, because of the fact if i did no longer, i could have a no longer uncomplicated time finding out no remember if i exchange into happy with the place my existence exchange into going and with my strikes. If somebody shows I do something, i like to be waiting to ask myself, "Is that the form of outrage that i could do?" and function an answer. Like if somebody needs to bypass to the Liquor Dome and invites me alongside, I verify with my "self" and comprehend that whilst my chum might discover this exciting, i could probably be bored and vaguely uncomfortable, so I ought to bypass on that invitation. If i did no longer have a feeling of "self" how could i understand that i could discover the Liquor Dome uninteresting, and that this is basically my decision, no longer the inherent boringness of the Liquor Dome?

I only attach a label to my self when I'm here.
The rest of my life, I deal with people face to face.
I am judged in the real world by my actions and not my words. None of us on Y!A know each other, except by our words.
