QUOTE
"and cant people lie"

Lots of people do lie, and when they get caught they start up new registries like the "Continental Kennel Club"
AKC has a bunch of reps and one of their functions is to randomly stop in on people that have applied to register a litter and assure that their records are in order.

Here is an example;
Some years ago a litter was advertised in the local paper as "Registered Black Chesapeake Bay Retrievers", (Chessies only come in various shades of brown) One hour after a phone call to AKC there was a rep pulling the litter registration, the registration of the mother of the litter and suspending the AKC privileges of the breeder (pending AKC board action)
So it is safe to say that AKC takes the accuracy of the registry quite serious.

The way that AKC will recognize the original group of registered dogs for a breed will be done from the records of the "National breed club" for that breed. The National breed club also will write the Standard for that breed.

Registered dogs come from other registered dogs - a long line stretching WAY back to the time the breed was initially recognized. This lineage is called a pedigree; it is sort of like the dog's family tree on both sides for generations back. There is no way to fake it.
When two registered dogs are bred, the owner of the dam will register the LITTER; then it is up to the purchasers of the individual pups whether they want to go ahead and register their puppy. A reputable breeder will even place "restrictions" on a pup if it is not show quality and breed standard; that the pup is pet quality and must be altered, not bred.

Huh?? Dogs were registered as the breeds were accepted into the AKC for registering... They were registered cause that's what you do when you have a purebred and they are eligible and you can trace their background etc... Why would people lie? Then none of the records would be correct.. Who would want to lie, just to mess things up? The AKC can check your records at any time, and they can also make you get your dogs DNA'D to prove who is who and who produced who etc... You can't just get a number to register your dog... They don't blindly register them.. Have you ever been to the AKC website and read thru the information?? Why would you ask?? Are you planning something to try to get away with something you shouldn't?? Pretending your byb litter is purebred??

Here's how you register dogs: http://www.akc.org/reg/index.cfm

The AKC people agree to make a breed official and after that you can register the puppies of that breed. From then on you have to keep pedigree records to make sure you don't bring in outside dogs.

Sure people can lie, but the AKC has a lot of guidelines to prevent it.

I'm not a big fan of the AKC becuase I think breeding for conformation is a serious problem for the health and wellbeing of dogs but they don't blindly register them. They're pretty fussy about it.

the owners of registered dogs have their dogs breed....when the puppies are born the dams owner sends in paperwork with litter information. the akc sends to the dams owner papers to be filled out for each live puppy to be registered.
