"In June 1830 the first chapter of Moses was revealed. Joseph Smith called the first chapter of Moses a “precious morsel.” This precious morsel expanded upon the Bible’s meager but still helpful verses concerning the plurality of worlds (see Gen. 1:1; Heb. 1:2). Our planet, we know from the revelations, is but one among “worlds without number” (Moses 1:33), which “worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:24).
How many planets are there with people on them? We don’t know. There appear to be none in our own solar system, but we are not alone in the universe. We see the universe differently and correctly. God is not the God of only one planet! We see how the perspective we have is expanded dramatically by the revelations of the Restoration."

Because their prophets spoke it:
God used to be a man on another planet, Mormon Doctrine, p. 321. Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, Vol 5, pp. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol 2, p. 345, Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333.)
After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pages 345-347, 354.)
"Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them," (DC 132:20).
There are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163.)
There is a mother god, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443.)
God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children, (Mormon Doctrine p. 516.)
"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345

We do not believe that upon death we receive a planet. We do believe though that we will continue to progress after we die, and through this progression we will gain our happiness. We will continue to learn and grow, and after a long time, those who are righteous will eventually attain a state in which they may have their own spiritual offspring and worlds of their own. I believe the discourse by Joseph Smith where people draw this doctrine from is called th King Follet discourse. The most reliable source is the History of the Church and the Journal of Discourses.

Considering the size of the physical Universe, as known by human beings, what is wrong with a group of people getting their own planet in the after-life? I'd give a planet to every organization that wanted one, simply to keep all of them from having to fight over limited physical space as they do on earth.
Planets for all.

Scientists theorize that there are enough planets, like earth that humans could live on, in the whole universe for each person who is on the earth to have 5 planets to themselves. So why is it crazy that everybody could inherit their own planet.
