This site is an eye opener -- especially the venomous attacks on people who believe differently -- I have counted an equal number of atheist bashers and Christian bashers, so I 'd call that one a draw.
The sheer emotion of some of the responses makes you really thin about -- how threatened does someone feel to FLAME OUT like that against a paerson they don't even know?
Anyway, make no mistake -- America is and always has been a deeply religious society AND a deeply secular society. at the time of the Founding Fathers (and Mothers) there was no doubt that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, of Sarah Rebeccea Leah and Rachel, of King David and King Solomon and king Saul, of Jesus and Mary and Joseph, that this was THE GOD.
But there were such well-defined differences in worship that tolerance, not criticism or comparison, was the order of the day. the ONE THING that united all was the notion that we would NOT tolerate intolerance.
If only that could be true in this forum, today!
Good observation on your part.

You will learn on this forum that you will certainly get comments with the answers,
you need not ask for them:
I am a Christian, a disiplined student of the original manuscripts for about 35 years, and my studies continue..
If you do not want to be offensive, then why do you say there are too many Christians on this site - is it me or am I in a Religion and Spirituality forum? Did you think we should be in the cuisine section?
There is a group called "creationists" who are very loud and say that the Bible states the earth is about 6000 years old, so of course evolution must be wrong.
Unfortunately, no matter what group you look at whether it be Christian, Buddhist, or even a knitting group, you will find very grounded individuals but also nut cases.
Its just the way it is; the group called Creationists are in my opinion nut cases, who are biblically illiterate.
I am sure they mean well.
The Bible does not say the earth is 6000 years old; in fact, it states this earth is eons and eons old and that there was an entire earth age before this one. We live in the second of three earth ages, which you can read of in a regular Bible in 2peter.
Anyway, between the first earth age and this one that begins as you read in Genesis,
this earth sat destroyed from a war with Satan. It sat still for an uncounted, vast number of billions of years. We know what the earth was doing during that time, since we can read of the fine and dedicated work done by the worlds scientists. These scientists and their hard work should be celebrated, not fought against. There is absolutely no controversy between the truth in Gods Word and true Science.
They go hand-in-hand.
As far as the percentage of Christians, I can tell you that CNN stated about 8 weeks ago that the USA is just a bit above 81% Christian. As far as "creationism" goes, I guess that depends on whether you mean
believe in what those creationists say, or if you simply mean "did God create the earth";
my answer to you is this:
God created the earth and all that is in it,
and the Science that you read is man looking at the creation that God made.

Something on the order of 80% of Americans claim to be Christians of one stripe or another.
As for creationism, it depends largely how you phrase the question, as with most any poll.
The Gallup poll from last year is commonly cited: 46% believe in special, recent creation; 36% in theistic evolution; 13% in non-theistic evolution.

What Acid said about Europe pretty much applies to Australia too. We're lucky that our one contribution to the "science" of creationism took his show on over to America. We're lucky, America, not so much...
I'm with you, this site was a revelation (no pun intended) to me. I wasn't raised in an atheist household, but not a religious one either. I'd say your parents did a really good job if they managed to keep all the wackiness away from you in America.
Thing is, don't close yourself off either. Finding out about this stuff can't hurt you, and it's always good to know both sides of every story. You say you enjoy reading - well some religious stuff isn't too hard going!

I went through the exact same thing when I first came here. I was also raised atheist, and had no idea that people actually believed in a Global Flood or that the universe was 10,000 years old. I don't even know how to engage these people in debate, because they clearly will not accept any evidence.

Hopefully one day we'll evolve and no longer need this archaic religion concept. While 80% of the US say they are christian, I have seen very very few who actually practice their religion as they are taught and supposedly believe. We have awful crime, horrendeous murder and rape rates, but everyone is a christian! Yeah right. I have been mistreated and cheated by more christians than I can shake a stick at. My christian minister relatives treat their family members with disrespect, one even stole from his own father and left him penniless. Manmade gods are a good crutch to lean on, I guess, to blame or to celebrate when you are afraid to say anything else.

American politics is heavy influenced by right wing religious fanatics! they have a strong influence on our culture...
Most American have little knowledge of world issues, geography and other cultures. So is hard to give a percentage.. In my opinion is about 50% Christians, 30% other religious affiliations, 20% agnostic/atheists.

I believe in Creator. I just have a hard time buying into the whole Christian thing. My parents and grandparents were traditional American Indians who said they were Christian just to get along.
However, it is not our Native belief. Most American Indians have "Creation Stories", so I guess that makes us "creationists."
