Of course it is. Your conscience is like your invisible shield, it protects you from certain dangers. If you don't have an educated conscience, it could be fatal. If you are not in peace with your conscience, that's a red light. It means something is wrong. The only way you can truly be at peace is if you read God's Word and if you understand it. Only He can help you educate your conscience the right way.

I actually want to say just the opposite of what Cosmicdrifter said. Conscience is the voice of God. Being omnipresent and omniscient, He knows all our littlest desires and aspirations, even the ones we are not aware of. He resides in our hearts and guides us, sometimes through the voice of conscience. Of course, whether we accept the guidance or not, that is a different thing and is up to us, this is where free will comes into play.

The idea of conscience only applies if one considers doing the wrong thing. Once one is committed to doing only what's right the idea of having a conscience ceases to exist. So based on that, having a conscience is necessary until one commits to right thinking and right action.

Conscience - definitely a good thing. That is what guides people to do good and to avoid hurting other people. If your conscience pains you, you can find peace with it by 1) admiting you did something wrong (to yourself and to whoever else you hurt, and to God); 2) trying to make amends.... and if you can't make amends, trying to help other people, so you can try to make up for the harm you have done; 3) not doing the wrong thing again - and trying to avoid doing things that you know will make you feel bad; 4) having faith in God to forgive you, through faith in the Atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Oh, one more thing. It is very hard to obtain peace of conscience (and forgiveness) when you do not forgive other people. Nourish yourself spiritually to develop an attitude of forgiveness toward others.

To think that ones conscience is God speaking is a big mistake, true goodness is beyond good and bad. But if all one can rely upon is there conscience it's better to do good.
