Does anyone know what happens to the K9 dog if it's handler decides he doesn't want to be a K9 handler anymore? Is the dog adopted by another officer, or does that officer have to fill out his time until the dog retires?

Thanks everyone for answering - for those who were curious. It's for a story I am working on - one officer wants to leave the force- problems at home - many his own fault. My hero of the story would like to adopt the canine officer - just wanted to know if possible. Thanks again!

i am a k9 cop and depending on the dogs age they will adopt the dog out. Checking with all prior handlers to see if they would adopt the k9. if no k9 handlers are able to adopt the dog out they go threw applications of the civilians and visit the applicants home to see who best qualifies to adopt a k9. if the K9 is still young he will be placed with a new handler

I too, find this disturbing! While I'm certainly not the expert, it would seem to me that not every dog that enters into training can be suitable for the job required. This appears to me to be a case where come hell or high water, the Cop is bound and determined, that the dog WILL submit. I would also have concerns how this dog might react in the "Heat of the Moment". If this type of training has been deemed appropriate, or simply been treated with a "Look the other Way" attitude, then I think it unfair that this Officer take the "Heat" alone. Although, I don't think this Cop should continue with training dogs, I do think the punnishment is excessive, compared to the "Slap on the Hand", that most recieve for far worse cruelty. It does make me wonder how those living under his Roof live. Hopefully, this will incident will shed light on a subject that has obviously created controversy. I would certainly be interested in hearing what other K-9 units have to say!

the dog and the officer become so close and spend soo much time together I don't know why the officer would not want to have the dog anymore, but I suppose the officer would have to stick it out until the dog retires. I've asked my local K9 sergeant and he said "Why would anyone ever want to get rid of their police K9?"

In my dept. the handlers buy their own dogs so....they are stuck with them.

I can't see someone getting out of K9 voluntarily.

Hey-
I'm not 100% sure but from what I've seen/heard police dogs are normally retired to their handler and live the rest of their lives after service.
