The repair manual doesn't say anything about them for my '95 Nissan Maxima, but want to replace everything I should replace when I get my shocks done. Is it also necessary to install cam bolts to do an alignment afterward? Is my car even equipped with lower insulators? Answer only what you can. Thanks.

They cost about $20 from Advance Auto. They come together with a dustcover. Not an absolute necessity, but wouldn't hurt to have them.

When you release the lower strut bolts, your camber will go off. This is because the bolts keep your camber by friction - they allow some angular play, once the correct camber is achieved, you tighten the bolts to "clamp" on to the hub assembly. So you will definitely need an alignment job. Make sure you tell the guy that you've messed with the strut bolts.

If you're doing this job yourself, you can loan all the specialized tools from Advance or Autozone for free. The only tool I loaned for this job was a spring compressor. You then need a ratcheting socket set with a lot of elbow grease.

A jack stand would help to support the (heavy) hub assembly once the strut is released.

You should not have to install new bump stops unless you have seriously lowered the car or damaged the OEM stops. Installing struts and shocks is not that hard, but you have to have the correct tools to do the job, such as spring compressor and a high powered impact gun. If you don't have this, you are up against the wall. Just take it to a suspension shop, not the dealer, and have them do the job, including the alignment. It is worth the money to have it done right and keep you teeth in your mouth.

I would suggest replacing the shocks and struts only. The bump stops should be fine. You can see them if you look inside your rear wheel well. Cam bolts are required to do an alignment on any vehicle!! If yours doesn't have them, you should be able to order them and receive them within a couple of days from your local Nissan dealership parts dept.
GOOD LUCK!!

you do not need to replace them and you should not need and alignment after replacing the struts. be sure and inspect you brakes and cv axles while you are doing them
