What is the application? In general 430 is a cheaper material, typically used in a mirror-polish condition for decorative applications. 304 is superior in most respects, including resistance to corrosion, weldability, cold forming ability. If the ducts are for air only, with no corrosive gases, there is probably very little reason to choose one over the other besides cost.

430 stainless is less expensive than 304 because there is only a small amount of nickel in it. It also is less corrosion resistance for the same reason, but it will polish similar to 300 series stainless due to it's chromium content, which makes it a better choice than mild steel in moderate heat and corrosive environments. Because it will discolor and rust, it is commonly used for industrial and non exposed applications where it's corrosion resistance satisfies the design requirement. Anywhere cosmetics is important,an example would be the exposed control panel on a stove, a 300 series is used. The 430 would be used for the burner supports, or shielding. Ducting where moisture and a low concentration of acid are present is a good application.

steel is also an alloy - principally of iron and carbon. The reason ordinary steels rust is that the iron oxide is not tightly bound to the surface, revealing fresh metal to be oxidised. Stainless (like aluminium and titanium, both very reactive metals) forms a tough coat of oxide that protects the bulk.

Which one to use would depend on the application.
What are you putting thru the ducts and at what temperature?
