I'm almost 12, and haven't been to the doctor for 2.5 yrs, because my parents lost their insurence [but now have it back]
I forgot what they do.
I know [for sure] that I'm getting a tetanus shot and an HPV [possibly others]

So...What do they do, exactly?

If you go to a pediatric dr. which most likely you are, they'll just do a check up and make sure you are up to date with your shots and they will look down your throat, just to make sure that you don't have an infection. they will also check your weight, height and ears. They most likely wont' do anything that involves you being uncomfortable your only 12. you will most likely be with your guardian like your mother.

They check your eyes, ears, and throat to make sure all are healthy. They feel your glands in your neck to make sure they are ok, too. They listen to your heart and your lungs, asking you to cough to make sure you have no congestion.
They test your reflexes, but that doesn't hurt. They check your spleen, etc, and other glands by gently pressing on your stomach and that area.

They sometimes do breast exams, though I am not sure if they do them at your young age. However, if I were you, I'd request a female doctor. I didn't like having a breast exam from a male doctor, but if that doesn't matter to you, don't worry about it.

They also may or may not do a pelvic exam. I'm guessing not, but I haven't been to a pediatrician in a long time and my only child was a boy.

I am glad for you that you are getting the HPV. You sound like you have very good, caring parents.

You will more then likely get a physical and your shots. Here is what will happen.

You will sign in. Wait in the lobby until they call your name.
You will go back to your room. A nurse will come in and take your blood preasure, your heart rate, your oxygen 02sat, your weight, height and listen to your chest. She will write all of that down into your folder and leave. Then the doctor will come in and look at your folder and read what all of those things were. He will then look in your ears, your throat, listen to your chest and back, take that little thing and hit your knee's to check your reflexes, look into your eye's with a light, feel of your neck checking your lymph nodes, and feel of your spine. He will ask you how yuo have been etc. And if everything that was checked is ok that will be it. Another nurse will come in and give you your shots. You will then make a return appointment and leave.

Nothing to worry about at all. I know so much because I am a mommy myself and have took my kids to their doctors for appointments and physicals tons of times.

EDITED to add: The above poster mentioned that he may check your private parts. I just wanted to let you know that most regular medical doctors wont do this. When I went in for my 12 year check up I worried about that and it never even happen. And my 12 year old neice just had hers and they didn't check her there either. OBGYN doctors usually check your privates not regular doctors unless there is a problem.

Good luck

The will weigh you and measure you. They will take your blood pressure, pulse, respirations and temp. The nurse will ask if you have an problems like frequent urination or trouble with your bowels or headaches. Once the doc comes in he will check your eyes, ears, nose, throat and mouth. He will listen to your lungs and heart. He will have you lie down and palpate (press) your stomach to be sure nothing feels unusual. He may check your reflexes with the little rubber hammer and he will probably check your spine for scoliosis. If you need shots they will administer those so you are up to date on those. They may have you urinate in a cup to check for a problems with your urine. That is it.

check your weight... depends on if youve started your period yet - they may check you out "down there" If they do, they'll be very nice about it and take their time so youre comfortable. If you havent started your period they still amy check that out.
and kudos to your parents for getting you the HPV shot!
