We don't need a draft. We will have plenty of troops to defend the homeland as soon as we bring them back from Iraq.

We can't use a draft. At all.
(1) It costs too much to outfit each servicemember as it stands; the extent of training and outfitting an effective combatant is far in excess of what was the norm for Vietnam, with its "shake and bake" NCOs and "90-day wonder" officers.
(2) Because "political correctness" has filtered down to training and discipline, we cannot take the gangbangers, the fatbodies, and other problem children born from the 70s on and turn them into killers if they're drafted. Volunteers can be changed; draftees, no. "You can't smoke a quitter" is very, very real.
(3) We've cut troop strength far too much since the Clinton era to expand overnight. We've cut too many installations through BRAC in the effort to cut costs. We don't have what it takes to put 500,000 fighting men on the ground with a society that is divided, where half of it doesn't believe in either responsibility or sacrifice.
If this was the 40s, then a draft would work. This is the 21st century. Everyone from the 60s and 70s who was part of that protest generation that destroyed America should be proud of their handiwork.

We DO NEED THE DRAFT!!! I think it would help with all the trouble makers here in America. But I believe everyone over the age of 18 should spend 2 years in the military. Plus we need all the troops we can get, if we had more then the guys could spend some time at home with their families. My husband just came home from Iraq and will be sent back again in November. If there were more troops maybe he would get to be home for his daughters first Christmas or maybe even her first birthday!

We do not need a draft, we need honesty in reporting. Had the Clinton administration not cut the Army to 1/3rd of itself, we would have the forces required to have normal rotations in Iraq. If the media were to report the truth instead of their anti-Bush slant, more people would want to serve. Reenlistments are over 130% in Iraq. Obviously people want to stay in and help out over there.
I also don't understand why a perfectly healthy 20 year old (or the parents of) would protest at Recruiting Centers. If they stop people from enlisting, a draft may happen, and then he is gone. He should be pushing people in the door so he won't have to go.

Instituting a draft probably wouldn't net the number and quality of troops you might expect. In prior wars, like WWI or WWII or even Korea, most young men drafted simply served. Americans were, by and large, less educated and more respecting of the law back then. Today, most Americans are well-aquainted with the concept of Civil Disobedience, and taught that it's more heroic to defy your country than to fight for it.
What a draft would do is create more momentum for the anti-war movement, which is why it gets brought up so often, even though it's vanishingly unlikely.

If any of you knew anything about war and the way the military works then you wouldn't be sayin this ****, askin these stupid questions and making assumptions about the military when you know nothing of it! If the soldiers and sailors weren't in iraq, they would be in another country! there are soldiers and sailors all over the world serving their country as instructed, knowing that they would end up going overseas somewhere, probably going to war. They took the draft out because too many people disagreed with it. We don't need the draft, we have plenty of people in the military and plenty joining everyday!

SS ... Oh, you are so very, very right. We need more forces AND the draft should never have been suspended in the first place.
I have reasons for that comment. While some people like Pat Tillman know what it means to step up and do their fair share, I worry that the vast majority of young Americans may be content with the current system as long as it's someone ELSE signing up to carry the load that others should also be helping with.
If we're attacked again or our need suddenly becomes significantly greater, what do you suppose is going to happen? I can hardly imagine, but it won't be good.
You asked a great question and your solution is absolutely correct. Thanks.

It's funny all the people who are against a draft or basically concedeing defeat but then they want to win the war in the next breath with a voluntary military force.
The hypocrisy is as dumb as the policies of their failed administration. It cements the weakness that this country has become. It basically says, I'm for the troops just as long as I don't have to fight because I don't believe this war is worth fighting for...but Semper Fi Dudes! LMAO!

This country is based on freedom and a draft is in direct opposition to that idea. We have survived as a country for a number of years without the draft and at this time would not truly solve the iraq issue.
PS- I volunteered for service and retired after serving both overseas and in the US in both non-combat and combat units. And still believe in my fellow volunteers.

So we should enslave our own population to secure freedom?
Even the "generals" don't enjoy using draftees. They make poor soldiers.
It's easy to call for a draft when you know you aren't the one being drafted. These type of people are called cowards.
The real heroes are those who volunteered to fight. A draft would be an insult to those who fight for our freedom.
It takes courage to think. Do you dare and try? Or will you call out for our sacrifice while hiding behind your computer?
