I know why we went into the war, but why exactly are we still there? I am looking for intellectual answers here. Not Bush bashing and what not. I support the war, and Bush. But, I am a bit lost as to what our goals are over there. Thanks ahead of time.

Because George W. Bush is still in the White House. It's just that simple.

We are still in the war because Iraq is not capable yet of policing their own country. There isn't enough Iragi military and the government, although making progress, still struggles with control. Americans helped to free Irag from oppression and tyranny only to expose the land to terrorists and religious turmoil.

We simply cannot cut and run or Irag will be taken over by the terrorist groups and the Iraqis could be worse off than before the war.

the average citizen will never understand that the world is at war for reasons that we do not talk about in the press.

after all is said and done the fact is war is very profitable and the powers that be know what they are doing.

Money and power are very addictive and a war time regime has a free hand at using billions of dollars in resources in the name of defense. The economy of most wartime country's grows. What got the US out of the great Depression of 1929 was not the programs of FDR but Word War II put us into a war time economy and sent most of the able bodied men into the military and thus the rest of the country worked and their was not unemployment for many years.
The factories worked round the clock and pushed the farmers to grow more food..so the war created a base to make the United States a superpower...as the rest of the major countries were in ruins..check it out.

War is very profitable or it would not be.

It took the United States from 1776-1789, 13 years of peace and prosperity, led by educated men, thinkers, with all of the states working towards a common goal, to come up with a Constitution and a form of government that 9 of the 13 would ratify.

Let's throw in religious hatred of the two factions of Islam that exist in Iraq, the fact that Al-Qaeda is very prevalent there (misnomered as insurgents by American media personnel), the high rate of illiteracy even in the "ranking people" and a religious based culture and body of law.... we are obligated under the rules of war to rebuild any nation we conquer. We conquered and are fulfilling our obligation.

We remained in Europe for over 50 years to maintain peace, help rejuvenate the economies and to prevent Germany from doing it a third time (by the way, we are still there for that reason). Don't forget being in the Balkans since 1994, helping them rebuild and trying to provide stability (you never hear about them anymore, but soldiers are still getting shot at there trying to keep the peace between Muslims and Orthodox Christiians, along with centuries old hatred of geo-political infighting).

We are still in Iraq because we have to finish what we started. WeI cannot leave until there is a stable government and the sectarian violence has settled down. Were we to pull out too soon, neighboring Iran is likely to step in and take over which we cannot allow to happen. Iran is the country who threatened to wipe Israel, our strongest Ally in the Middle East, and were crying 'death to the USA'. Iran is the main sponsor and supplier of weapons to the people who are killing Americans over there.

I have to believe that we're still in this war because we are Americans and as such we fight for freedom and democracy all over the world. Plus since we sort of broke it we have to fix it. God Bless America. Be strong!

I belive that Iraq is in need of help. We are trying to provide it to them. they cannot really run the country without us there becasue people will die. People in Iraq at least some of them do not support the new government.

It's simple.

If we leave now the area will become a terrorist breeding ground and you will see genocide on a scale that would make the holocaust look like the VT shooting.

That's easy. There is still lots of oil there and Iran has lots of oil too and it's right next door.
