Religion is more general than Communism. Religion involves belief or contracts between men and higher beings. There are Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism and etc.
Communism is claimed to be more scientific and about more specific kind of socioeconomic and political system. It is one of other systems such as Democracy, Autocracy, Feudalism and etc.
Most religions are good and helpful when dealing with personal crisis. Communism is not that personal. It is more at societal level.
I don't think you can totally compare the two.
However, throughout history radical forms of both can be dangerous. It depends on the implementer and not necessarily the religion or communism itself. So it is not fair to blame the religion or communism in general for the bad things.
With political correctness climate, you are bound to offend at least some people.
Like you said. Let's find out.
Good luck.

I would say religion is probably much more dangerous than communism. Think about how many people have been killed in the name of religion versus how many people have been killed by Communism.
