God gave us all a conscience. The conscience seldom bothers us unless we are feeling guilty about something we've done, not done, or said. That's when it springs into action. I believe that the conscience is the voice of God who speaks to us. The imagination brings forth images and scenarios, but it doesn't come into play when we've done something wrong. Therefore, there is that subtle difference between what we picture in our minds as imagination, and the messages that God conveys through our conscience. Others may explain it differently, but that's my interpretation.

Listen with your spiritual mind, God speaks in a still small voice. However to be sure, simply ask God to give you the confidence to know. Always listen, and look for his promise. If you seek him boldly and with confidence you will always know it is He who speaks. I myself struggled with this same situation years ago. Just remember to obey what he says, even when you want something else. Never choose your way, Submit to the will of God and he will direct your path. Proverbs says Lean not unto your own understanding, in All your ways acknowledge Him, he SHALL direct your path. When you pray try to 1. trust in His timing 2. rely on His promises 3. wait for His answers 4. believe in His miracles 5. rejoice in His goodness 6. relax in His presence. To sum it up YOUR SPIRIT WILL ALWAYS KNOW, so don't worry about a thing.

There have been murderers who claim that God or Jesus told them to kill. Of course, in courts this excuse did not hold up and those murderers were considered insane instead of divinely inspired. Of course if someone claims that they heard God or Jesus tell them to do something that our society considers good, they are divinely inspired and must have truly been visited by the creator Himself. Funny how that little double standard works...

Let me say that from my own experience it is something that cannot be explained by mere words, a lot have tried and not succesfull. I know you really dont care about this but since I have experienced it, I can tell you that from that moment on, your life changes, because like most people here, I didn't have a strong faith, and when chosen to serve God, I like many before me could not believe I was being called.
May God bless you in many ways, and may someday, like Saul, your blindness may lifted from your eyes and you too can see how wonderful it is.

You don't really know for sure unless it is out loud or something. I heard a voice speak to me out loud twice in the past year or two and I knew it was God or an angel. Both times the voices were so loud that it woke me up from my sleep.

My imagination sounds like me, the Spirit of truth doesn't. The Spirit of truth knows things that I could not possibly have known.

Your imagination is not capable of always knowing the truth nor the future. When you have learned to listen to the Holy Ghost and do what is prompted, then you will understand.
