I would add to the first answer, meditation. Not the kind of meditation that relies on emptying the mind or repeating chants. I mean the quiet meditation that fills the mind with God's thoughts, found in the Bible.

Reading is good, but it is better to spend time with what you read in the Bible. Time to let its message really reach and massage your mind and heart. Time to ask, "What is this verse saying to me personally?" Time to ask, "How can I apply the wisdom of this verse in my own life?" Time to ask, "How can this verse help me to solve a problem or find a solution to what is troubling me?"

In other words, a good connection means spending real time with the Person you are trying to connect with.

You can't make the connection.

All you can do is to get yourself in a state that is favorable to letting it happen.

For me, it was (as a previous poster said) "being still" internally and externally. That included being able to turn off the thought process.

BTW: In my case, the "something bigger" was within myself, not outside of myself.
