If it was a reproduction made in the last 25 years or so, it will be marked by the maker. Also will probably say " Black Powder Only" on the barrel.

If you have one that appears quite old, some rust but some blue left, and it says Ilion New York on the barell, send it to me.( Just kidding, but if it does say Remington and Ilion New York and model 1858 New Army, you probably have the real deal.) Just be careful since there are people that do very good "fake" jobs. If it is real and you are asking about a price, check any sites out by including "Civil War collectors handguns". Values can vary widely depending on condition, but perfect ones could go into the thousands.

Chances are, it's a reproduction.

However, there's a one-in-a-million chance it's an original.

How did you come to possess it....was it left to you, did you buy it. etc. are some questions to consider.

If original, it's 150 years old and is going to look it. Cowboy gun reproductions are always popular and many, many are made today in places like Italy and Spain.

Take a look at some and see how yours compares...

My late grandfather, an old rancher, told me that every pistol he has owned or seen worn in the cattle business had been employed at a week as makeshift hammer in wire fence mending. 'Look at the butt, sonny', he would say, 'that is where honest ranch work gets done.'
