He is usually quoting Old Testament, which Christians respect as history but do not follow. When he does quote New Testament, he twists it so disgustingly that it can no longer be recognized as the Bible.
I would not speak to him, but I would organize a group to surround him and block him from the sight of those whom he is hurting. It has been proven that words don't work on him, but this does help.

The man is criminally insane, I'm not sure if the Christ himself showed up that he would be able to talk any sense into him either. As near as I can tell, the best example of anyone showing God's love to Phelps, would be the people who make a line in between them and the poor mourners who are just trying to get through the day in one piece, and they have the grace to stand in front of him without being goaded into beating him up. But that is lost on him, as much as any words are.....You can't reason with someone who is unreasonable...
To be honest, I hope that every mourner of every funeral he's ever ruined shows up at his, if for no other reason that they can know for sure he is dead....

Anthropologists have said that religious beliefs are a reality to the believers. There is evidence of this world wide. If you are raised with a belief and sheltered from all others the belief will remain your reality regardless of evidence to the contrary. This group has cut itself off from the surrounding community by the hated they bring out in others and this has helped reinforce the beliefs of the congregation. The only hope is that the people of the Nation and the World reach out to the members of the Westboro Baptist Church and embrace them with tolerance and kindness. But this is next to impossible due to the feelings their message invokes in us (myself included).
There are no words that could work to change the minds of the members of this church, only actions. But actions are harder than word.

I would ask him why is he driving people away from God? I would ask him. how can someone who claims to love God so much hate as much as you do. then I would tell him i have 2 Cousins fighting in Iraq for HIS freedom to say all these hateful things. and he turns around and says such GROSS and hateful things. I would ask him who he works for because It's NOT MY GOD.
Then i think i would say one last thing to him. i would remind him that he has to face God when he dies and then he will know the kind of pain that he is putting on people with all the hateful talk.

I wouldn't say anything. It's all been said to him before. He knows what he's doing.
I'm not a Christian and I don't agree with anything that man has to say about anyone else. He's another Jim Jones as far as I'm concerned.
No words of wisdom, no scripture... just picket his own family and churches funerals... give them a taste of their own medicine... with signs that say "Treat others as you want to be treated" =)

he believes that bad things happen to those who deserve it for sinning against his god.
I have an uncle in the military who has been to Iraq several times, if he were to die, and if Fred Phelps and his followers came to his funeral to picket, I would use a bat to beat the living **** out of them. Harm would have came to them, so they must have committed some sin that made them deserve it in their book.

It would be honestly hard to find love of any kind to show that man.
I really doubt I could speak to him without being pretty darned rude, actually.
I'm sure he must be inwardly tortured somehow but what he does is so despicable.
I hope I never have the occasion to meet him.

Some scriptures to counter his hatred:
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
"God is love."
"By this people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves."
"Like apples of gold in silver carvings is a word at the right time."
"Let your utterances be always seasoned with salt."
"You must love your neighbor as yourself."
And lastly, my personal favorite: SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man is that guy a thorn in the flesh!

I would say nothing. He isn't worth the effort it takes for me to draw my breath to speak.
I think we need to pressure the media to stop ALL coverage of those idiots. They're thriving on all the attention they've been getting. There's even documentaries on them in EUROPE, now.
