objects in my peripheral vision seem to "slide" either when im reading or just staring into space. could this be optical neuritis? this is one of several new symptoms ive been experiencing over the past few days, including numbness/weakness/tingling in my hand and leg

No idea. It might also indicate a stroke or other condition of the nervous system. Let a doctor check you out.

The major symptoms are sudden loss of vision (partial or complete), or sudden blurred or "foggy" vision, and pain on movement of the affected eye. Color vision in the affected eye can also be impaired, with colours appearing washed out compared to the other eye.
Often only one eye is affected and sufferers may not be aware of the loss of color vision until the doctor asks them to close or cover the healthy eye.
Ethambutol, an antitubercular drug, can also cause optic neuritis. I don't know about the tingling and numbness as this doesn't seem to be a general symptom, the two things you're suffering maybe unrelated . I would strongly suggest a visit to your GP if to put your mind at rest if nothing else.
Incidentally I sometimes get the "sliding" you're referring to when my eyes are strained and/or tired.
