I think the biggest mistake people make in hitting the heavy bag is to try to make it move. The bag swings because it is being "pushed". This is the exact opposite of how to gauge punching power. Pushing the bag takes energy, wasted energy. When you can hit the bag with 100% extension and full power, making a loud pop, but without making the bag swing, then you will be able to survive for more than five minutes, and your punches will carry a greater "whallop" too.

To make your punches stronger, faster, and more effective you can simply make sure that you are turning your hips enough. All of your strength and speed come from your hips. So, work on that and you will be able to make them better than they are already. :)
For surviving the punching bag, I would just practice a lot. That always works! :D

If you're taking a MA just be patient. You will learn to punch hard once your kata teach you the proper technique behind a good punch. I could give you the default, 'blah blah use your hips, blah blah picture your body like a towel that you're whipping' but i'd suggest doing it exactly like your teacher says. Things are taught to you in a certain way in order to provide the best results. I know it was taught to me that way and halfway through my training in wing chun i'm like OMG that's why you showed me that when i first started and things will really start coming together and your punches will naturally work eventually. the important thing is patience, grasshoppa. :)

Punching a heavy bag. all the frenzy-united statescontained in the worldwide won't strengthen your punches because of the fact an invaluable punch has little or no to do with muscle mass on your hands. capability for a punch acutally comes out of your base - i.e. your legs and hips. Shadow boxing is smart for coaching speed, yet for capacity, you truthfully would desire to punch some thing.

Weight train, and get used to punching like using the bag as often as possible. Eat meat and generate testosterone by shouting and being agressive or what ever other method you prefer.

wut u should do is get a weight like i say about 5 pounds tie a rope thru the hole in the weight. wit the other end of the rope tie like a stick like a broom stick or sumthin it has to be maybe a foot long. make a hole directly in middle of the sticc then push the rope thru it an tie it in a bunch of knots. now wit ur palms facing outwards grab the sticc and start rollin this is gonna make ur forearms strong as hell and when u punch some1 u might knock em out

any strike-punch or kick is 75% technique and 25% power. correct rotation of the hips alignment of the body upon impact and relaxation until the point of impact are vital to the application of a successfull technique-its all about body mechanics.

Quit doing kata and take up kick boxing or regular boxing.

The thumbs will be flying down on this one but it is still true.

How hard you punch has nothing to do with your strength. I could be in a fight , with someone who is swinging off the wall punches, and I could straddle her with both arms and flip her and slam her as* on the ground, now if she a fat girl it might be a little harder. You wanna be strong, lift weights. Hard housework, etc.

I am not sure how to give Robert thumbs up, but he's got the answer.

Kata does not improve punching power.
