The best advice I can give is to cut out junk food. You know, chips, cookies, candy, soda, etc. You can still have sweets, but have it in moderation. For example, once a day have a slice of cake the size of the palm of your hand. And try to eat fruit for dessert instead of something unhealthy.

Instead of soda, try water. If you don't like the taste of it, try sparkling water or flavored water. Even tea, if that's your style. Just try to drink something that's not highly carbonated.

Essentially, to lose weight you have to lose more calories than you consume. So just try to eat smaller portions, fruits and vegtables, and excersize for at least 20 minutes a day, even if it's just walking.

People often equate healthy food with bland, tastelessness that is just a necessary evil. That can be true, but it does not have to be that way.
Choose some of your favorite foods and make them appealing to you. For example, I love carrots. I buy big bags of baby carrots. I wash them and eat them as snacks throughout the day. I do get burned out on them from time to time, so I try my hardest to make them more interesting. I like hummus. (esp. the garlic flavor). I buy a tub of hummus and dip my carrots in it. The hummus makes my healthy snak more interesting, but does not add a lot of fat, calories and cholesterol like dipping them in salad dressing.
Plan your meals in advance. With today's busy schedules, life can be hectic. If you have to "run by the store" after work, pick up the kids, drop off the dry cleaning and so on, you are more apt to buy something that is quick. Quick is not always healthy. Plan things out and purchase everything in advance. The meals don't have to be hard - they can be very simple, but don't fall prey to buying something unhealthy b/c you're hurrying.
On the same note, never go shopping when you're hungry. Impulse hunger buying is bad too.
Find alternatiaves. Many people think they need to completely eliminate things from their diets in order to eat healthier. Granted, some things are really bad and you should avoid them altogether, but other things can be replaced. For example, instead of eating ice cream, try to eat sorbet. It's frozen fruit juice...granted it has a lot of sugar, but unlike ice cream, it has much less fat. If chocolate is your thing, try low-fat chocolate or something along those lines.
Good luck!
