And clearly, God said, "for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” But for some strange reason, Adam and Eve both ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and both of them lived another 900 years.

Why did God lie to Adam and Eve? Clearly, in this story, the serpent was much more truthful than God.

What's with all the absurd rationalizations. The Masoretic text clearly states in Hebrew "for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." It does not say, "you will begin a slow 900 year death", or "you will experience a spiritual death that will catch up to you in 900 years" anything else. Why do people insist on changing the meaning of the Bible?

930 years is a normal life span? How did God determine 930 years to be normal, since he had never created a person before. And why did God change his mind about what a normal lifespan should be. Because today he only lets people live 70 years on the average.

Sharon M, read my previous question. God apparently did not create Adam and Eve to be immortal. This is clear from the text of Genesis and no Christian was able to explain it.

jan, great rationalization...but it's not biblical.

The outcome of consuming from the tree was once each non secular and bodily demise. It was once best God's grace that saved them from instantaneous bodily demise. The serpent deceived Eve pronouncing "You shall now not absolutely die" and the complete global has fallen for that adding Christians who think they pass immediately to heaven after they die. In truth, demise isn't regarded as an enemy. It simply transports one to a greater stage of life. No marvel many want to die alternatively than undergo on this existence. Such is the energy of Satan's deception. Good and evil are relative. You are not able to recognize one with out the opposite. I believe that is the rationale why sin originated within the first situation. And that's additionally the rationale why "Affliction is not going to get up a moment time." (Nahum one million:nine)

I like the way you question scripture after reading it. I appreciate it - not only are you asking real questions that need answers, you are also causing Christians to really test their faith. That's a wonderful thing.

God is awesome and He IS truth. There is no darkness in Him. He does not lie.

Adam and Eve would have never had to taste death. The would have lived forever. Because of sin, however, they chose death (in the OT, God asks the Israelites to choose life, not death - i.e. choose to obey God and not to choose a sinful life). Adam and Eve lived a long time...but as with everybody else (Enoch and Elijah excluded), they had to eventually die.

God measures time differently than man. 900 years to man is within one day for god.

God cannot lie - if he could, it would be impossible to have faith in him. In this instance he did not lie.

The serpent was not more truthful. The serpent clearly made the assertion "You shall not surely die." - yet as a result of taking the fruit they were cast out and became subject to death.

Even if you do not accept my first point - that time is measured differently - you must agree that if you had two friends - one who told you "Eat this and you will die today" and another who said "No, you definitely wont die" - but as a result of your eating that you did eventually die... The one who was more truthful would be the one who correctly predicted the outcome. Therefore - your assertion that the serpent was "much more truthful" is completely false.

Adam and Eve immediately began the process of dying. At that moment when they ate from the tree they ceased to be perfect and were therefore subject to sin and death. God allowed them a normal lifespan (for the day) in order to continue his original purpose of filling the earth with their offspring. At the same time God made the way out by preparing for a ransomer to come and buy back the perfection that Adam lost.

everyones said just about everything I think. Except for the one also important fact that the 900 year old deal was not a set # of years to live. There is a scripture later that says no man shall ever live pass 120 years, uknown scripture refrence point. I think it might be somewhere after the flood. But in the bigger picture look at the fact that Jesus came to earth so that man can be free from sins, there is the proof of spiritual death. he intended for us to live forever, hence the fear of death phrase allot of people aren't afraid of dying but at one point they were. Anyway when we are in heaven then we are eternal also it says later in the bible that there will be a second earth. Keep asking questions, it is good for us to be questioned. Remember we don't have all of the answers. I know where I can find them though

"Why do people insist on changing the meaning of the Bible?"

Why do you insist that death can have one and only one meaning? Meaning comes from context, not from rigidly using the same word the same way all the time. Example:

1) I took photographs at the wedding.
2) I took photographs of her with me wherever I went.

Using your "logic", "took" would have to have the same meaning in both sentences when it's should be obvious (well, at least maybe to anyone who isn't an atheist) that the context clearly indicates that the word is being used in different ways.

A day in the life of God is to us a 1000 years...so in that context they did die that day. Nevertheless, your question is only in half context to the text which speaks of spiritual and physical death. If they had not, they would probably still be here in both physical and spiritual health...and under many other different circumstances.

Adam and Eve were made perfect. In the image of God. Not following God's commandment, to sin, led to separation from God which leads to death not just physical, but death without hope of eternal life.

In a way that is true cause if they had not eaten from that tree.
They could eat from the Tree of Life and live forever. But instead got an enviction notice.

Genesis 3:22
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

God does not lie and cannot lie - it is not His character - there is no evil in Him - this is the first thing you must accept and remember.

Secondly, the tree was not poison. They died but not a physical death - they died a spiritual death.

This is why it is so crucial to accept Jesus - your spiritual eyes will be opened to the spiritual things of the Bible - without Jesus you cannot fully comprehend the Bible - you just can't - sorry.

Blessings dear one. Remember God is love and goodness - He loves you and I pray you find His Son, Jesus, and believe on Him and be saved.
