He also gave us brains to think about the effects of drugs and start 'understanding' and develop ourselves.

God created the Earth, it is mankind who abuses what is on Earth. God did create the plants and animals, each one to serve a purpose. People seem to think that the purpose for pot is to get high. However, they are smoking a poison that actually does damage to the body. Hemlock is also a poison, but it kills a lot faster, so we do not abuse it. Pot, in a medical setting does help those with cancer, but then it isn't used for abusive reasons. It needs to be pointed out that cancer is fought with poison (chemotherapy) to try and kill it before it kills the person. It seems to be easy to blame God for everything that goes wrong. "If God is so powerful and loving, then why would he allow bad things to happen?" The answer is that He didn't, we did. If we know it is bad and wrong, then why do we insist on still doing it? God also gave us common sense, which doesn't seemed to be used when it gets in the way of what we want. People will sell everything, including their children to score a hit. Show me in any religion where that is acceptable. We blame God while we dance with evil, and then blame God when things go wrong. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. We are responsible for the, choice, action, and consequences of what we do. God waits to judge us when we die, and he will ask why we didn't hear or read His warnings.

He didn't. The ingredients that make up abusive drugs are here on earth to be used for good things. Man created drugs and uses plants/chemicals in a way for which they were not intended.

Drugs are there for medicinal purpose to cure. Cough medicines are used to stop you from coughing. You use it when you do not have cough, that is a misuse. Use it continually without precriptions, that is an abuse. Now, why do you blame God for human's abuse of himself?
The same thing with marijuana and other relief inducing medicines, they are there to cure people's ailments. It started as reliever, then it becomes a regular need until it was used excessively even for purpose to more than just pain reliever. Did God say we have to abuse all that is made for our good use? of course not. Do not make God as your excuse for your own stupidity.

The elements and chemicals that form in our universe enable complex reactions to occur without conscious thought. Bacteria, hormones, plants and animals are only possible because elements react predictably under various conditions.

Sometimes the reactions are inconvenient for us. Bauxite is a useless material for us but it is natural. We prefer to refine it into a purer element, aluminum. Throughout human history, we have spent a great deal of time concentrating and purifying materials to make them more compact, powerful and efficient. In many cases, what was once useless but harmless becomes useful but toxic, because it is rendered into its purer, less natural and more reactive state.

Without understanding quite what they were doing, ancient people started collecting and categorizing plants that appeared to have beneficial and harmful effects on people, listing them as poisons and medicines, learning their effective dosages. We have developed modern Western pharmacology out of this ancient herbology, extracting, concentrating or synthesizing natural chemicals into more powerful configurations. Nearly every mind or mood altering drug is such an adaptation.

A problem develops when the purer form is produced. All the beneficial effects are maximized to a degree not found in Nature. Fermented plants are brewed into alcoholic beverages, then alcoholic beverages are distilled to produce spirit liquor. Smoking pot is a more efficient way to deliver free THC to the bloodstream than eating it. People are endlessly creative at finding ways to concentrate the active ingredients in useful natural substances to produce an ever higher high.

And it's not limited to "drugs" as such. Refined sugar, flour, fat, salt, etc. have conditioned us to expect food to have concentrated flavors and higher food energy, even as the essential micronutrients and non-nutritive elements are bleached and ground out of it. Chemical companies design products that are so lethal that they've started genetically modifying plants specifically to resist the chemicals, thereby creating revenue through a patented plant stock while reducing plant diversity to a catastrophic level. And enriched uranium provides economical power but there's no safe place to store the waste.

The more we cultivate, extract and refine materials to concentrate their properties, the more dangerous they become. There are always good reasons for doing it but there are also consequences. One consequence is abuse.

God created atoms as the basic building blocks of the material universe. We didn't start abusing them until 1940. Should we blame God for making it possible to create a nuclear explosion? Should we blame God for allowing the possibility of concentrating food nutrients so much that it causes malnutrition? And should we blame God because we can find a way to turn a pain reliever into an addictive drug?

Excellent question. And you got most of the expected answers. You will notice that not one theist really answered your "Why?" question though.

Their standard answer to explain why bad things happen to good people, is to say that god gave us free will. But this answer fails miserably! WHY would god do that, as he knows/knew that this would lead to so much mass-murder, injustice, misery, and pain? What should we make of someone (something) who creates or allows evil when he has the power to prevent it?

The real answer is that no benevolent god would allow such things to happen. So we either have some kind of an evil god, or there is no god at all.

Drugs are not abusive, people are.

Most drugs that are abused, also have some good applications when used wisely. For instance, in the olden days (Britain), women used to take Belladonna (deadly nightshade) to make their pupils dilate and their cheeks look rosy. It made them look more beautiful.... but it eventually sent them compeltely crazy.

However, Belladonna, in homoeopathic form, is an excellent treatment for very high fevers and delerium.

God wants us to learn and exercise wisdom. That's why he gave us so many options, in regards to plant life on earth.

God didn't look down on earth and say, Gee I think they need some crack cocaine. He did however give man free will. God did not put drugs here, man one day decided to make them himself. God gave us the ability to do many things, what we choose to do, is up to us.

People have the capacity to abuse them.
