A friend who was joining a year ago told me that if you don't like the pistol you're issued, you may use a different one, but you have to pay fo it. Is this the case? I do not tust the Beretta, and I would much prefer to carry a 45 into combat.

As MOPP stated, you must use teh issued weapon. I spent 12 years on tanks before changing jobs (I was an E-6 Platoon Sergeant-no more room for advancement at the time) and loved tanks. I was there from the Colt .45 to the Beretta. The Beretta is the weapon of choice due to its ease of use, cleaning and more rounds. Also, as mentioned above, you will use the 120mm more than the 9mm. If you have to use the 9mm, you have srewed up and are just trying to save your own butt now and will need the extra rounds.

You wear what you are issued! Get good with the 9mm as all close in gunfights occur with-in 10 feet. The 1911A1 Colt was the first practical Semi-Auto pistol ever produced. The Marines used it during the "Banana" wars when the standard issue .38 wouldn't put down the Sandanista attackers. Then Major Lewis"Chesty"Puller asked Sam Colt to design a round that would do the job, along came the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) The Marines sucessfully used the .45 untill the early 90's All Semi auto pistols to this day owe their success to Sam Colt and his 1911A1 .45 ACP

You will be encased in 6-8" of chombham, packing a 120mm hyper velocity smoothbore cannon, 1 Maw Deuce, and two m60 machine guns. And you are worried about what pistol you will be carrying? Are you daft boy? If the bad guys peal back your armor and disable the 120 and all three machine guns, I would seriously doubt you'll care very much what kind of pistol you'll be allowed to carry.
But to answer your question directly...you will have to be qualified on the Beretta, but you can pack any damn gun you want so long as your ammo fits rules of war--no dumb dumb bullets...only .45 APC.

Latest gossip in the military websites is the Airforce is looking at the M1911 Colt auto for re issue, and the Marines are looking for a new .45
Doesn't answer your question really does it.?
Have heard you're stuck with what you are issued with unless you buy your own and it is approved.
It would be a real bugger if you were the only one using a .45 and ran out of ammo. You wouldn't be able to borrow a clip from a buddy, alive or dead.

they simply began recruiting back the different day so ur in success. i became into in it for 4 years and located it to be very reliable you're saying your married... you would be constrained to the barracks for greater or less 6 months so u wont be aloud to flow living house basically on the weekends. after the six months is done its exceedingly a lot 9 to 5 70% of the time the the remainder of the time you are going to be everywhere in eire or out of the country. so may be hard going with relatives life for some years till you get settled in. after the 1st 7 to 10 years you will get a reachable job using or some thing yet you would be on your feet for the 1st few years.

If you are driving a tank and find yourself needing a sidearm you have bigger issues than not trusting a Beretta. That being said you can only use what the US Army gives you.

Probably not, and if you do get one, don't forget the ammo. Do NOT get a POS Government 45 either. They suck. I used one as an MP in the early 70's. You would have better luck throwing the thing at an enemy. Hollow point 9mm will stop prople very well.

sparky..if your going to use your side arm in a tank battle your in deep trouble..the Beretta is a fine weapon..you get 15 shots compare to the 8 with your 45. and the what happens if you need more ammo..you cant use 9mm in your 45..I would rather have a smg like a mp5 like they give to air crews..good luck and thanks for putting your life on the line so every one can life a free life..here in America..the side arm should be the least of your worries...have you even shot a 45 ..go try it first..I like to carry a 357mag..its the number one man stopper..good luck..

You are not allowed to carry your personal side arm to combat or on any military installation. I understand your feeling about the berretta I'm not fond of them either. But a little FYI for you the military is looking into getting rid of the 9mm and going to a bigger caliber side weapon system.
