I'm not sure excatly why milk helps you, besides the calcium. However, I do know you should drink 3-4 glasses a day, especially teens. Drinking milk helps you build more muscle, and stay slimmer.

Calcium! You need to take in Calcium for strong bone as a child and teenage years. After 20 the bones are formed so then you need to keep up a certain amount of calcium intake. You also need vitamin D to absorb the calcium. You can get low fat milk, milk that has other vitamins, let alone Omega three oils. Nothing better than a nice cool glass of milk on a hot summers day. I would say four glasses would be fine if you are under 20, but over 20 probably a bit too much. Likewise if you drink tea, coffee, with milk, or eat cheese, you could be having too much. If later on in life you start to loose 'bone density' then they give you calcium and vitamin D supplements!

Milk has three things in it that are good for you: (1) Protein, (2) Calcium, and (3) Vitamin D. Protein is good for building and sustaining muscle, calcium and vitamin D are good for building strong bones and teeth. PROBLEM: Regular milk is high in fat, and it's all saturated fat. The easy fix there is to drink skim milk -- it's not bad once you get used to it. If you drink four glasses of skim milk a day and the rest of your diet is in order, the milk will be good for you. Just remember that too much of ANYTHING is bad. Watch the fat content in milk and cheese, and don't eat/drink more than your body needs. Your body is very good at self-regulating, so eat when your stomach grumbles and stop when you first start to feel full. Those are the two ways your body tells you that it needs food and that you've had enough.

The three things that are healthy in milk are calcium, protein and Vitamins A&D (which are added). It also contains high amounts of fat and sugars, the lower the fat content the higher the sugars content.
Because the dairy industry has so much money to throw around on advertising, they fail to mention that calcium can also be found in fortified soy milk, soybeans and nuts, broccoli, collards, kale, and others. These will all provide suitable replacements for your calcium.
The best place to get your Vitamin D is to spend fifteen minutes in the sun a few times a week. Go ahead and sunscreen your face first, it gets plenty of sun whether you know it or not, but leave some of your skin out for fifteen minutes before applying sunscreen.
With the new carb-conscious society, I doubt I need to point out sources of protein.
Vitamin A can also be found in broccoli, potatoes, carrots, onions, lettuce, cabbage, asparagus, radishes.
So the answer is, milk does nothing for you that you can't get anywhere else. Include 4-5 servings of vegetables in your diet each day (it's not as much as you think it is) and you'll have low-calorie, virtually fat-free way to get everything you think you're getting out of milk without ingesting hormones, bacteria and other chemicals added to commercially sold milk.

If you are trying to lose weight drink 1% milk, or skim. You still get the same benefits, calcium for your teeth & bones.
