I don't actually think the Bible literally says this but, as with many other things, sections have been taken out of context and used to support a particular point of view.

Actually the original translation is not "thou shalt not kill" its' "thou shalt not murder". Otherwise how could a christian justify eating anything, even vegetables?
AFAIK I don't actually think there's anything really substantial. I think the general belief is that God gave you your body and your chance to live in your life, so why should you then deny God your existence and kill yourself? Therefore, you have defied the Lord God's greatest gift, so hell is deserved for you only.
personally really though if God gave us free will as people think he did, then he would have given us free will to choose our own destiny, our own fate. Who is man to deny us our "God given" free will?

How about Exodus 20:13................. "Thou Shalt not kill"
or Leviticus 24:21
Suicide is self murder........ there is a whole section on Murder in Matthew 5: 21
"Do not murder and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment....will be in danger of the fire of hell."

From what I gather, that is Roman Catholic doctrine. Not something that the Christian church had in belief as a whole until then.

i don't think it is written like plainly saying don't kill yourself or youll go to hell.but killing yourself is a sin just as much as killing another person, people like to argue and say then why do we kill animals...animals don't have souls like we do...they don't go to heaven or hell when they die....
