My pets (Pug and Jack Russell) run away whenever I go out to the front yard. I mean I can get them to stay most of the time but if I'm outside doing yard work I cant get them to stay in the yard and I dont want them going to my neighbors yard to mark. Especially my pug who once he starts marking he has to mark everything and he's fixed! How can I get them to stay in the yard when we are outside?

An X-pen will work, as will leash runners. I really don't like invisible fences - they are cruel, and they promote a very false sense of security as they may not actually stop your dog from running - and they won't keep anything from coming into your yard and hurting your dogs! An X-pen is more secure as are leash runners.
I agree with Jess' suggestions above - practice your recall a lot with these guys. Leslie Nelson has a book and DVD out called "Really Reliable Recall" that is excellent. Good luck!

You can get an invisible fence or a fence for your front yard. If neither are options (if you lease or cannot afford it at the moment) you can get a long training leash and tie it to a tree in the front yard - we did that with our lab/shepherd when my mom worked in the front. The training collars have handles, so we just wrapped the leash around the tree and put the long end through the handle - unless the dogs ripped the leash off, they couldn't run out from undoing a knot (a worry with a big dog that could pull a knot out). Just be responsible and make sure that they have a shaded area to lie in and some water, even when you're out with them.

Enjoy the time outside!

Instinct can 'over take' even the most well trained dogs on occassion.

Your options are to invest in a fence so they are confined to your yard. Or get them tie outs.

Most places have leash laws, so your dogs being outside without out a fence or a leash is likely illegal.

Obedience classes would also be good, even if you've gone before, refreshers never hurt.

Make sure when you call your dogs and they come to you, you praise them like crazy and even offer yummy treats. You have to make coming to you more exciting than whatever it is they are investigating. Coming when called cancels out any and all misbehavior the dog may have been doing when you called it. If you call your dog to you to yell at it, the dog takes it as you punishing him for coming to you. This will make him not want to come to you in the future.

Please DONT get an invisible fence. How would you like to be shocked by something you can't see? These fences are cruel and ineffective.

A cheaper, more effective method would be a line in the yard. Strung from tree to tree (or pole to pole), you have a line that the dog is attached to. It gives the dog free range to run back and forth between the lines. Any hardware store should sell the supplies needed.

Leashing the dogs or getting a fence will keep them in your yard. Otherwise any time they hear, see, or smell something interesting they will run. It is part of an animals nature to be curious, but not necessarily safe.

Where I live you have to fence them in & others have to fence them out. What kind of fence you choose to use, use it humanely.

Another way is to put them on stakes or cable runs that prevent them from leaving the yard. With this one you will be untangling dogs pretty often.

The best & safest is a regular physical fence, wood, chain link, block, or what ever & check for escape routes. If you don't find them the dogs will.

An old saying, "Good fences make good neighbors."

i would say get an invisible fence but i dont really believe in using them. you should just get something you can put in the ground and attach their leads to so that way they can still run around and play but can not run. that or get an outdoor pen for them to play in.
