Because it makes your community better. Indirectly, you help yourself by helping those around you.

As a career LEO it becomes second nature. The voters have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to train and equipment me for a life time profession. This can't end with retirement or being disabled. There are too many opportunities to give back for men and women in my situation.
When I was finally disabled from my last job (insurance investigator), I went to the community I live in and joined C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team). In the event of natural disaster, most times, the local C.E.R.T. Team beats the first responders to needed assistance in their own community. C.E.R.T. teams exist in most states check out your state Government For either C.E.R.T. or S.E.R.T. Training is provided free of charge and most equipment is also provided.
I also became in involved with Neighborhood Watch in our Park.
These two entities fall directly in line with pretty much what my training involved. Thus "Giving Back" is a natural.

There are just so many draining our communities if people didn't step forward & give something back we would all be going down the toilet real fast!

2) It multiplies happiness.
