So much depends on the individual dog. A lady I worked with, had the ears pierced on her Chinese Crested. The dog barely noticed, and loved the attention she received when wearing her cute earings. However, many (if not most) dogs would go nuts with scratching their ears, and shaking their heads.

If your dog is one who loves the attention of getting dressed up, and gets excited over getting new clothes, then she would likely tolerate the ear piercing. However, my own dogs can barely stand to have a raincoat put on, and think snoods are embarrassing..so I know they would go ballistic with an earing.

Note: to those who say it is immoral or cruel, where do you get that! Yes, infection is possible, if it isn't kept clean or gets scratched too much, but it is certainly no more painful than a puppy shot..and probably much less! People have it done to themselves every day, and voluntarily...that lady I mentioned had it done at her beauty shop, with a little toothache numbing gel applied first..She swears the dog didn't even notice... I am betting the same people take their dog to the groomer, who always hurts more than that..or put a choke collar on them..Any long haired dog has put up with more pain when being brushed..Com'on!....
(however, you shouldn't do it if you have more than one dog in the house, or for an outside dog, or one with floppy ears)

Absolutley not. Why would you want to? The dog can't consent to it, and would most likely tear it out. Why would you want to put your dog through that? Piercing is something that should be reserved for beings who can express wanting the piercing and consent to it (ie: people!)
Your dog is meant to be your companion, not some fashion accessory.
As for the poster above who questioned the morality of it....Puppy shots have a reason which benefits the dog. You're protecting them against disease (which is also why you get innoculations for your children) Piercing it's ear causes pain, distress and possbile infection and for what? It looks pretty?
For the Vet tech, you're disgusting. Tattooing an ear (or microchipping) is a way to find a lost pet, so that they can be brought home safely and not suffer in a shelter waiting to be put down. piercing an ear is purely for the owner, and entirely for some twisted sense of fashion. We should not do anything which causes our pets pain unless there is a real benifit in it for THEM, and if something painfull needs to be done, we should do everything in our power to minimize it and help them cope.

That is probably the worst thing I have heard, along with tail docking and ear cropping. The pinna (ear) is very sensitive and something as simple as a scratch can cause infection and hematoma, never mind a pierce. If you care for you pet then their welfare is more important than something that is aesthetically pleasing to humans. Trust me your dog isn't going to be looking in the mirror and thinking wow I look hot.

Yes, it is okay to pierce your dogs ears, it's really not anymore cruel than tattoing their ears for identification. You really need to watch them though and make sure they don't bug them and tear it out, that could cause a problem. Some dogs really don't mind it at all. It seems to be a fad right now and lots of people are getting it done. Soon it won't be out of the norm like lots of people on this list seem to think it is! Just use your best judgement and make sure the dog will leave it alone.

No.

Dogs don't care if they purdy earings in or not. This will also have to potential to be very harmful.

The earring could get ripped out of the ear causing alot of tissue damage if the dog simply scratched his ear. Or while playing.

Skip the earrings and go with a nice collar instead.

No, it is not okay to pierce any animals ear.
When humans pierce any body parts, they are unaware of accupuncture points that may also be affected that may not be beneficial to their health.
Honor what the animal is-a dog!! Not to be used as a possibly cool or trendy thing.
Why would anyone risk a possible infection or wish to do such a juvenille unconscious thing anyway?
The question in itself is very telling & I for one would not wish to be an animal under someones care even contemplating this.
Apparently I have signed on to a sight for children. That is okay as kindness & care is valuable to all.Education is the best tool.
Again-NO IT IS NOT OKAY TO PIERCE AN ANIMAL!

NO!

Besides putting an animal through the pain just to make yourself look better by making your pet a toy, you are opening your dog up to infection. You would need to turn them at least 2 times a day. To keep your dog from scatching them out, you would need to keep a cone collar on until they were fully healed. Even after they are fully healed without infections, the possability of your dog scraching it or getting it caught and ripping them out with a piece of its ear would be too great to justify 'beautifying' your dog by piercing its ears.

Okay as in legal, moral or physically possible? I think it's legal, unfortunately, and physically possible, but I don't think it's moral. WHY would you want to put the dog through that kind of pain? Doesn't do HIM any good? Rather selfish if you want to do that because you think the dog will look cute or pretty. Let the dog be a dog. You'll both be happier.

And why would you want to do that? And no, it isnt a wise idea, think of how many times you see dogs scratching their ears with their claws, what happens when the dog catches her claw in her earring... Common sense goes a long way
