He told me that he went to put our american bulldog outside because he was leaving for work. The dog started to snarl and tried to bite him. Why???? What would cause this? The dog is always great to me. My boyfriend was attacked by a dog when he was younger so now he is really freaked. What should be done?

Could he have startled the dog? Has he always been good with your bf before this? I can understand him being freaked out by this... but he must overcome it too. Otherwise he'll always carry a certain amount of fear toward dogs and dogs can pick up on that.

The dog could have felt threatened by another male close to his owner. Let the dog see your boyfriend isn't any harm, and make sure your boyfriend wasn't being threatening. The dog probably felt he should chase this person off of his territory!

the dog could've been spooked by something like a loud noise or if there was another dog in the area.. weird smells can also cause them to act strange (i had been at a friend's house one time and she has 2 dogs.. when i went home my dog constantly sniffed me and growled).. if this is the first time i really wouldn't take it as a huge threat unless it happens again..
