With very little walkingof standing my legs (fromt he calves down) start to ache badly. They also start to ache if I sit still for extended time. Further, they get cold easily and the only thing that will warm them up again (or relieve the aching) is soaking in hot water. I'm only 34 and slowly becoming crippled I think. Does anyone know what the problem is?

From what you have described it sounds very much like Fibromyalgia. I have enclosed an article that I have written about Fibromyalgia, which will answer your questions . After you read it talk with your doctor about this condition.

Other contributors have indicated vascular ('circulatory') problems. Although only 34, its a possibility, particularly if you are (grossly) overweight. (?) Are you in a sedentary occupation (?) Not exercise at all (?). Then cardiovascular problems are not ruled out.
Everyones legs ache if, (alternatively), you are standing up all day at work, but, the coldness (and loss of sensation?) as well as the acheing might suggest a neuromuscular disorder (eg Guillain Barre Syndrome) (which starts from 'the bottom' and works its way up) - for which a neurological work-up required.
See your doctor!
