He meant that we had to die to ourselves. Paul emphasizes when he talked about "putting to death the works of the flesh".

Romans 8:13
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Once we die... we are no longer bound by "the law".
Romans 7
Do you not know... that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?

When we die, we are now hidden within the resurrection of Jesus...

Colossians 3:3
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

In fact, the actual representation with baptism is to die to our old life (going in to the water) and being resurrected into a new life (coming out of the water). Hence, being "born again".

We must carry our cross, which is: the ways we sacrifice and give up everything for the SAKE of following Jesus including sin... like fear or doubt, so that we can follow Him. (which is what He says for us to do right after that). "And he who does not take his cross AND FOLLOW AFTER me, is not worthy of me." -Matt. 10:38 (emphasis shown by capitals, added).

Is there one thing in your life that you have the hardest time dealing with? For me it's being too nice to people. It has cost me allot in the past and I often get used. For me, this is my cross. I can't change it, just shift the load. Does that make sence?

Whatever burden you carry, because of your faith, must be carried one day at a time. God will provide you with the strength to carry it, when you seek His face.

It 's figurative to mean that we carry whatever burden the Lord sets on our shoulders. Figurative, mind you.

Some people had the burden to carry it to their violent deaths. But the Lord made them able to carry it. And He promised to do it. He always keeps His promises.

Its figurative of self-denial. In order to grow spiritually one must deny themselves of the things that hinder spiritual growth.
