My name is Jonathon. I have many roles and titles. I am Jonathon a son, a nephew, a coach, a male. All these titles, but I'm still Jonathon.

God has those same titles. He is the Son, he is the Holy Ghost. Each portion of his spirit has a specific role that needed to be done. God as we call "The Father" cannot look upon sin or the sinner dies. That portion couldn't come to earth as it is now, so we put a portion of that spirit in earthly robes (flesh) to walk the earth. That portion of his spirit had to return because it was mortal. So, he created another portion to dwell inside of us as the "Holy Spirit" to guide and nurture.

A better analogy would be water. Water can be liquid, solid, and gas, but it's still chemically water.

I think we do all share the same essence, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the Trinity.

Depends on whether you're differentiating between the "divine" and humanity.
I equate it to multiple personalities, or at least I look at it that way. And some faiths believe that they are three separate entities, FYI.

Not necessarily... Humans do not share the same "essence". We all have different thoughts, different ideologies. The trinity has ONE.

I believe that is exactly the case, otherwise Paul couldnt say things like "we sinned in Adam." Humanity may go through countless generations of existence yet we remain the same.
