Is Glaswegian a dialect of english or lowland scots??

Question

i am from outside glasgow and i can speak the dialect, but i also speak proper english due to it being taught in schools. but i also understand scots language, spoken in the south of scotland. for example some in glasgow the word for home is hame and the same in scots. so is glaswegian a dialect of scots or english??

About 2 months ago there was a piece on American public radio that stated that some society or other for the study/preservation of indigenous dialects in the British Isles (I wish I could remember the name of the group or had written it down) had officially ruled that lowland Scots is a language in its own right--so I suppose that would mean that Glaswegian is a Scots dialect.
I visited Glasgow more than 10 years ago and absolutely loved it. It was the only place I visited in Britain, though, where I was totally unable to understand when people spoke in dialect! Sometimes it led to comical situations, though of course people would always politely go back to standard Scots dialect when confronted with my blank, panicky expression.... :)

I met a man in Seattle from Glasgow about 14 years ago and talked with for a little bit. His English was definetly a Scots English with a noticible Gaelic (Celtic) lilt. It was not a British English in any way.

From what I've heard, however, standard British English is taking over in all of England and making inroads into Scotland too. I've also heard that American English is making inroads into both Ireland and Scotland just as it is in Canada. It will be interesting to see which one wins out (British or American) in Scotland for the people who are alive at that time. Though at age 57, I don't think I will make it.

hi, as i understand it Glaswegian ,is Glasgow scots dialect. different accent and some words with a regional meaning.
definitely not english!
