I used to take Topamax for Migraines and when I was on it, not only did it work wonderfully for my migraines, but I lost weight which has always been a struggle for me because I'm always hungry and LOVE FOOD! I am now back on the drug, taking 50 mg's strictly for weight loss. I am literally only on my second dose but wondering what is best to do, day or night? I do like to go out and drink beer so I'm not sure if I should take it before bed BUT I also have trouble sleeping at night and pretty much take a night time sleeping pill every night. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated.

I was on Topamax and thankful to be off it. I am glad it is working for you. I took the bigger dose at night and it can help big time to sleep. I was on it because it can also be used as a mood stabilizer and I was put on an extra anti-convulsant as I was on prozac which can interact with anti-convulsants. The reason why I am glad to be if it is because it would cause horrible diarrhea and although I am no longer on it, the damage is done. I am now taking IBS pills thanks to the damage Topamax caused. I might of lost some weight on it, but not as much as I really hope to loose.

I started out of 75 mg of topomax with not effect at bed time (I don't drink). I also take a sleep aid. I was taking it because the doctor told me that it would help to decrease the frequency of the migraines that I suffered, so I gave it a shot. After six month of this, it really didn't seem to be doing a thing, and I never really considered taking it during the day, since I have other stronger migraine medicines for attacks there.

He took me up to 150 mg at night before bed, and I have noticed a decrease in appetite, and more restless sleep, but the frequency of the migraines has decreased - noticably!

If you are on your sleep meds, I'd stick with the topomax at night, unless it becomes a problem with sleep. I'm not an MD, so I shouldn't offer advice of when to take it, but If I were you and I have problems with the sleep, I probably skip it at night and take it first thing in the morning.

Good luck to you.

I am also on Topamax as prescribed by my MD for weight loss (in addition to phentermine). She directed me to take it at night. It seems to make me so sleepy all the time anyway - I'm not sure if it really makes much difference, but I'm on 100mg. I think I could sleep all day!

I plan to speak with my doctor about getting off of Topamax next week because in addition to all of the annoying side effects (headache, fatigue, extreme irritability, acne, tingling hands and feet), it also causes my birth control to not be effective - no good with upcoming wedding.

my fiance takes topamax and it does the SAME thing. he takes it anytime throughout the day unless he knows for sure he has a plan to drink that day, just so it doesn't counteract. he's been on it for probably 3 yrs and after maybe 1 1/2 his weight was pretty much back on track.
as far as taking a sleep aid to at night, just to be safe you should call ur dr and ask them if they think it'll do anything. i dont think it will becuz my man does it sometimes and its never effected him in a negative way
