I've always loved these lyrics, this song. I find it inspiring, even chilling, depending upon where I am in my life when I hear it sung.
True or false? I can't say. I can only say what I hope. I hope that there is a higher power and that this world we live in is all part of a grand design that was orchestrated with love. I'm not sure I could face thinking this was all chance. That doesn't mean I would live my life any differently if it were all chance. I think I would live my life the same with or without the proverbial "pot of gold at the end of the rainbow." It just means I'd prefer to think there is a reason, even if it's beyond what I can reason.

I never believed that God was watching us from a distance. For me, the Divine is right here, in us, in the earth, in the sun, the moon, the stars, the Universe itself! Personally, I am a Pantheist, I believe in immanent rather than transcendent divinity. The song, itself, is beautiful. I just don't see a separation, division, or distance between creator and creation. And because we all are divine, we should treat each other with dignity and respect, regardless of religion, race, language, or any other label we use to divide each other into groups. We are all one. But isn't that really the point of the song?

For Bette Midler it is true, and I always respect others' beliefs. Just as I would expect others to respect mine. However, I don't personally feel it true that these things occur from a distance. My belief system necessitates that I and my dieties/guardians/guides are "part of the whole", not "separate from each other".

True. I don't know why people think it means God's not close by, too. He lives outside of time, so He can see the big picture and also know a sparrow has fallen. Personally, I find the big picture relaxing.
