What are the average fares for things in New York such as : taxi, subway, bus, (outside of transit cards if they do not cover bus fares), and the carriage rides in Central Park (in February - during the week)? And what are some of the cheapest lunch options we'd find? (I.e. - would it be trying to locate a McDonalds, street vendors, small cafés, lunch wagons?)

Subway fare is $2 a ride. You can get an Unlimited ride MetroCard for $24 I believe and you can save quite a bit of money there.

Taxi cab fare goes by this chart:
Initial fare.............$2.50
Each 1/5 mile (4 blocks).$0.40
Each 2 minutes idle.......$0.40
Night surcharge..........$0.50 (after 8pm until 6am)
Peak hour weekday surcharge...........$1.00 (4-8pm weekdays)
Additional riders........FREE

Bus rides: Local: $2, Express: $5

Carriage Rides: $40 for 20 minutes is the standard (excluding any tips)

Cheap lunch options, well.. any fast food places will be what you pay for fast food anywhere else, except some centralized locations may have some items missing from the dollar menu. Street vendors are usually cheap... maybe $1.50-$2.50 hotdogs (never more than that). If you're in Greenwich Village, hit Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave) and 8th Street and go to Gray's Papaya... for about $3 you can get 2 hot dogs and a drink...

Street vendors for food won't hit your pocket hard... they tend to keep it nice and cheap.

Mamoun's on McDougal Street has a $2 falafel as well that's to die for... and its right next to the Comedy Cellar which (during the week, if you reserve online) has Free Tickets with a 2 item minimum). Meaning, all you have to do is get two drinks and you can see free comedy. This is the Comedy room where Robin Williams or Chris Rock might show up in the middle to do a set... you never know..> Cheap good food and entertainment..

I grew up in New York so I know a lot of secrets of where to go for cheap food. I haven't lived there for the last two years so I might not be up on the exact price of a carriage ride (but then again, I never approved of how they treated the horses anyway). But I do know how you can have a great time in NYC without spending a lot of money...

Just to add to the other answers: an example of my average cab ride home, at night with very limited traffic is about $10. That's a 3 mile ride from the East Village in Manhattan to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The fare is usually just a bit over $8 and I round up with the tip and give him $10. Yes, the subway and bus rides are $2 one way. The Metrocard works for both.

Delis are probably the best place to get food. Some 'gourmet' delis have great choices, especially when it comes to sandwiches. *I don't know where you are from and I'm not trying to be condescending but a deli in NYC isn't just a meat counter or a butcher shop. They are basically 'corner stores' or mini markets where they sell basically things you'd find in a grocery store but also newspapers, candy, hot coffee, etc.. Some have salad bars or fresh packaged fruit* In Manhattan there's at least one on every block. Some are more expensive than others but I can usually get a HUGE sandwich with exactly what I want on it for about $6-7 (sometimes 'foot long' size). Sometimes I can only eat half of it. You can pick up a drink there as well. A 10oz bottle of soda is usually $1.25.

You can basically spend the same amount eating food from a deli as at McDonalds but at least the food choices are healthier. You can find Subway or Blimpie ALL over NYC too if you want the slightly healthy fast food choice. Sometimes cafes and restaurants have lunch specials that are not that expensive. Just check the menu/chalk boards they have outside when you pass by. I've never eaten from a street vendor in my life and I probably never will. It's cheaper to get a soda in a deli then from a guy on the street anyway.

Minimum taxi fare is now $2.50. Additional charges are $0.40 per 1/5 of a mile (at or above 6 mph) or for 2 minutes of time stopped or traveling below 6 mph. The night-time surcharge is $0.50 for rides beginning from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. The peak hour weekday surcharge is $1.00 and is charged for rides from 4 - 8 p.m. weekdays. There are currently New York taxis testing out accepting credit cards for payment, but the majority of New York taxis accept only cash.

Central Park carriage rides: $35 for the first 20 minutes, $10 each additional 15 minutes.

Subway: The cost is $2 per ride, no matter how far or how many times you transfer (as long as you don't pass through the turnstile gate; if you do, another fare must be paid). Purchase either tokens (coins for each ride) or a MetroCard, which can save you money on multiple rides. Options include the $7 one-day Fun Pass; the 7- ($24) and 30-day ($76) unlimited ride cards; and a pay-per-ride card ($10 for 6 rides - the sixth ride is free - but you may put any amount onto a MetroCard).

Bus: same fares as subway.

There are plenty of cheap lunch options on every block from McDonald's on up.

subways and buses are $2 one way, carriage rides, I'm not sure but I think it runs between $25 - $40.

Any deli that have lunch specials, like sandwich, chips and can soda for $5.95, street vendors are a dime a dozen; their dogs go anywhere from $1.00 to $2.50, shish kabobs are from $2.50 to $4.00. I'm not sure how much falefels cost.
