There are numerous options for you. Other than laminate counter tops there are solid surface counter tops (like Corian); there is also the option of granite tiles, and quartz (Silestone). Corian and Silestone are nice, and they are more durable and less expensive than granite. Unfortunately, you will have to have these installed by a professional.

Granites generally run $35.00 a square foot and up. Sometimes places run a certain color(s) on sale or they have partials that they price at a lower price. You can also look at Cesarstone. It is a quartz product with the look of granite.

It's also good to get at least three quotes for any major purchase, such as granite countertops. Call around, you might be able to find a better deal. Sometimes you can negotiate some of the breakdown pricing. Just ask the person providing the quote if they can do better on either square foot pricing, edge pricing, etc.

You can also check to see if there is a local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in your area. Sometimes people carefully take out their old granite countertops(because they want to change colors) and donate them to the Re-Store. You may have to have them cut down or may want an edge changed by a fabricator, but it is another option.

The health problems of living near a granite quarry involve dust and noise. There is a little bit of radon gas being given off from all granite around the world. Uranium is an impurity in granite in very very small amounts. So if the area is open the gas should disperse fairly easily. The dust and noise should be your biggest concern. The asphalt... I really don't know of any health problems but if it scheduled to be there in the near future it makes me think what else is coming to this growing industrial area. I would try to find another house... it is a buyer's market.

Granite tiles are available at a lower cost than having a full block cut and installed.

be patient. Often times there will be close-out sales at warehouses, where you can find granite at 45 dollars per linear foot. That is a bargain.

silestone is good. the pattern is even and the colors are too. when you buy granite, since its natural, you cannot guarantee uniformity.
