Did you fill out tax forms? If so, and you know the employer is submitting your information to the government, you'll have to pay your taxes next year, since they're not being taken out of your pay. Is it possible you are working under the table? If so, lucky for you! You won't have to pay any taxes. And you're also not financially contributing to any government activities or programs.

Your employer might or might not give you a 1099-misc at the end of the year showing your income. Whether he does or not, you are still responsible for taxes on the amount you earn. Keep good records of what you are paid, and any expenses you have that are for the purpose of earning that income. At the end of the year, you'll show the income and expenses on a schedule C or C-EZ, and also use a schedule SE to calculate self-employment tax (for social security and medicare). The numbers from the bottom of the two schedules will then transfer to a form 1040.

If you get a 1099-misc and don't file, you'll get a letter eventually (could take months, or even over a year) demanding the back taxes, plus penalties and interest.

If you don't get a 1099-misc and don't file, then both you AND your employer are doing something illegal, and will both be subject to penalties if and when you get caught.
