The "fish symbol" or icthyus was a means of Christians signaling one another about upcoming church services and whether or not it was safe to talk about God in a certain part of town. In other words, if a Christian brother saw a fellow Christian and wanted to talk about a religious topic, he'd draw the top half of the icthyus in the dirt. If it was safe to talk, the other person would draw the other half of the icthyus and the conversation would continue. Since it was a crime under the Roman occupation for Christians to gather in groups of more than three at a time under penalty of death for the purpose of having church, this covert system was necessary for early Christians to be able to communicate, witness and worship.

This is a good time to remind Christians we are to be 'fishers of men' - so many of us seem to act like 'hunters' of men' :-)
Jesus called us to be 'fishers of men' - a fisherman sits by the lake (A Christian needs to be near people). He puts some bait in the water (A Christian needs to let others know what he is all about), and then, a fisherman WAITS - he doesn't pounce, attack, bully, badger... God does the catching, if the person is interested. Our role as 'fishers of men' is to be available, give witness to what we have experienced, try to help others in understanding IF they want to know... and let God do the rest!

I heard when Christians were being persecuted they wouldn't come right out and say they were christian they would meet face to face and one person would make an arch in the sand in front of them and if the other person made an arch opposite to theirs it created a fish symbol, meaning that they were kosher... well they were ok to talk to

Symbols are important for the symbol minded.

it's not new, it's protestant--back in the day when protestants were persecuted, it became a secret sign, if they met with someone they thought might be a protestant, they'd draw half the symbol in the dirt with their staff, if the other person was a protestant, they'd draw the other half--if I were to make one up, it'd probably be @>;--

Looks like a flagellate to me, and I don't mean the religious kind.

Its a fish. Jesus liked 'em.

You'll notice fish on some cars that say Jesus in them, and you'll notice fish with feet that say Darwin in them.
