Where did the number '666' come from in The Bible?

I know what the number 666 represents in the Bible. But why was this number chosen? Why not some other number?

Rev 13:17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.
Rev 13:18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.

Before the invention of figures by the Arabs, in the tenth century, letters of the alphabet were used for numbers. The Greeks in the time of Homer, or soon after, are thought by some to have assigned to their letters a numerical value corresponding to their order in the alphabet. If you are familiar with the Greek of the New Testament, an argument can be made that the 666 is an allusion to Emperor Nero. Just as easily an argument can be made that the 666 refers to a "Latin Power" or, the Roman Catholic Church, Julius Caeser Atheus, Luther, and others.

As you can see from the above, there is no consensus on the interpretation.

God's number is three's and seven's; and six -the perfect geometrical and mathematical - is man's number. Best he can do, but never enough!

God is neiher a ninny nor some dork that He would leave this His warning about the darkest period of all time up to some theorising about "..well, maybe it's this, or maybe it's that!.. but then, who really knows?" No sirree! He's VERY clear on it and WHO it is and WHAT it means and what it's FOR! IF you've ever bothered to read it.
A lot of Muslims seem to have a clearer idea about that, than the so-called Christian world. Make fun of God all you want and turn a deaf ear but it's not gonna be God who's the loser.
Nero and Hitler and Stalin and Nepolian were only little -"types"- of the anti-christ. They were Mary's little lamb compared to this guy. he's gonna be the real McCoy.

The number 6 in Biblical numerology represents man, and incompletion. Three "sixes" in one man represent the Satanic impression of the Holy Trinity (Satan, Antichrist, False Prophet vs. Father, Son, Holy Ghost) as a means of deceiving people during the Tribulation into thinking the Antichrist is God.

Well, because what is taught of in the 6th seal? Antichrist comes.
What happens when the 6th trump sounds?
Antichrist comes.
What happens at the 6th vial? Antichrist.
Note that where you read "COUNT the number of the beast", that word "count" is not 1-2-3 counting, no, it means to enumerate over a long period of time,
as a rock that becomes smooth from water running over it for eons of time.
In other words, this mark of the beast can be found long ago. And, in fact, you can find its origin in the Garden of Eden; it
was the mark that was put onto Cain.
In Biblical numerology, 6 is the number of man, 66 is of war, and 666 is of Satan,
meaning 6th seal, 6th trump, 6th vial.

I think so it would work out better in heavy metal songs. Seven Seven Seven wouldn't work so go with a heavy guitar riff in the background. And one thousand six hundred twenty-five would just confuse most butt rockers.

It referred to a medallion (bearing the number) carried by Roman tax collectors as a symbol of their authority. Of course, the snake-handler crowd who have no understanding of history or their own fables have distorted the reference to fit their own agenda.
