I know the basics, and have thus far accomplished house-breaking (HOORAY!) as well as "sit" and "lay down" all on my loansome with possotive reinforcement, but getting her to assume the possition is tough.
How on earth do you get a dog to sit straight up on it's haunches, with front paws in the air *like a bunny*?

My dog is one of two things, a genious or a gullible idiot. One way or another, The tricks provided are working, all I did different was hold her butt down with one hand.
She doing well. Everything I've taught her (other than housebreaking, that took about two months once I buckled down) she picked up in a day.

I taught my labX to do it by putting her in the sit position and then with a treat in my one hand I told her to beg and I lifted up her front paws with my other hand until she was up in the begging position, then I told her "good beg" and gave her the treat. After a few times I slowly began to take my hand away right before giving her the treat. After about a week or less she was doing it completely on her own.

Hold a treat in front of his nose and raise it up until he stands up. When his feet leave the ground, give him the treat and a "good boy".
Repetition is the key.
Once he learns that you want him on two legs for the command (which by the way, should be somthing other than "sit pretty" because it sounds too much like "sit") let him stay on his back legs for longer periods of time before you give him the treat. Eventually he'll learn to balance himself and the position you want will come naturally.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/CnfXZ
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

LOL. we were jst in puppy class and the trainer jst told us secrets to do it.
what you do is either use a coffee table or an ottoman about the same height as your pup would be if he sat on his hind legs. position him in the pretty position and constantly say "pretty" and feed a treat. and then move him away slowly till he gets to balance himself.
i've found that my puppy will sit and i've cradled his front legs on my forearm and feed him a long lasting treat and say pretty. as soon as he focuses on the treat, i SLOWLY drop my forearm till he can balance himself. and keep saying pretty.
hope that works! good luck.

My Boston Terrior will only do it sometimes. Once they're sitting, say "up" and hold a treat just above their nose. If they stand up on they're legs, say "sit". Then "up" again. And again, and again, until he or she learns.

The only other trick I can suggest besides what others have said is to do it in a corner so they can't back up and they have something to balance against.
Please be careful because you should do this for a longish period because it could cause injury to their hips.
Best of luck it is such a cute thing.

Just take his or her fav snack and tell him/her to sit then wave the treat in the air. After a while he/she will get tired or standing and then they sit and have their backs straight. It's how i taught my dog.
