I don't see why not. My son is two, and loves to "cook" with pretend food. He sets up a little restaurant with a drive through window. I wish he had a little kitchen set, now that I think about it. As far as the gender issue goes, it's no different than a girl playing with a ball or an action figure. After all, many of the greatest chefs are men! (If we could only get our husbands into the kitchen more often.... maybe someday your son's wife will be thanking you!)

Boys Play Kitchen

I have two boys, ages 11 & 12, and a daughter 10. They all played with a play kitchen when they were toddlers. My boys all "learned" how to cook by pretending, and my 11 year old has been cooking for real, since about age 5 (when he comes into the bedroom and says "Mama, I made you pancakes....and he REALLY did! It's a good sign he likes to cook. LOL!) My kids all know how to cook simple meals now, and it doesn't hurt a boy to learn these things at all. While you're at it, start teaching him how to sort laundry, empty little trash cans, etc. I can't tell you how thankful I am that my husband's mother taught him how to care for a home & cook! And he's not a wimp, either.

My boys both had kitchens when they were young. They also has dolls. My girl has super heroes and monster trucks. You need to invest in toys according to a child's interest, not their traditional gender roles.

My boys were both given male Cabbage Patch Kids when they were very young, took them everywhere, loved them dearly. They both had a kitchen when they were young, cooked, washed dishes, etc in this kitchen, played with that thing every day.

Now, they are both very loving boys (12 and 14 years) they are gentle with their sister, very nurturing and affectionate. They helped me dress and care for her since she was born.

They also help cook and clean around the house. They keep their rooms clean, etc.

We didn't let male and female gender stereotypes interfere with what our kids wanted to do. If they showed an interest in something, we encouraged it. I think it's great that you are considering this for your son. Just be aware, that if he's not interested in it, those things aren't cheap lol. My daughter got a kitchen for Christmas this past year and she's played with it twice. It costs a pretty penny for something that's just taking up space in her room. lol

Absolutely yes! Pretend and dramatic play is a step in children's development and a kitchen set is perfect. We all eat, we all need to know how to prepare food. It is not a gender thing at all. He will likely 'grow into' the set as he is a bit young, but he will love it and it's a great thing to get as others can play with him (tea parties, etc) or he can play alone or with stuffed animals. It's a perfect thing for a child regardless of gender.

Absolutely! Pretend play is very important, and a kitchen set is a great setting. I want one for my son.

It would be a bonus if he learned to cook as he was growing up. My husband survived college on frozen pizza and burritos, and there's something very, very wrong with that. All kids should learn to cook. It's a survival skill.

My son is 21 months and he's played with his older sisters little stove for a few months now. She's too big for it, but he loves it cause it has a microwave that pops popcorn (pretend) and he pretends that he's cooking and brings us the plastic corn on the cob all the time. I think boys need to learn to cook - his future wife will greatly appreciate it!!

Absolutely, if your son is interested in cooking, or kitchens then why not? It's jsut another toy . . something that he sees Mom do in real life and wants to try for himself. Kids love to pretend so feed his imagination as much as possible!

Well, it depends on the child. I don't believe you shouldn't go for it because it's a "girl toy", so if it seems like something you think your son (as an individual, not just as a boy) would enjoy playing with, go for it.

Keep in mind, the world's most talented, successful, wealthy chefs are almost all male. :-)

I don't see why not as a kitchen is not a gender specific toy or are of the house. You never know he just may be a future chef!
