Limbo has never been a fixed dogma of the Catholic church but Pope Benedict may well be wrong in his decision, all he is saying is that we do not really know where the souls of unbaptized babies go,this is not so with adults, frankly I think that limbo may still be a valid place.

>>Pope Benedict has eliminated limbo for non-baptised children...<<
This is a common misconception. What he did was approve a recent document that states, "The conclusion of this study is that there are theological and liturgical reasons to HOPE that infants who die without baptism MAY be saved and brought into eternal happiness even if there is not an explicit teaching on this question found in revelation." (emphasis mine)

This is nothing new; something very similar can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was published 15 years ago.
http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/p2s2c1a1.htm#VI
Since we can only HOPE these infants MAY go to Heaven, the possibility still exists that they go somewhere else.
>>does this include non baptised adults as well?<<
Non-baptized adults (those who are old enough to desire to be baptized if they knew of its necessity, and make decisions for or against God) don't go to Limbo. They go to either Heaven or Hell.

We know that we need baptism to be saved. The Pope is saying since these little ones died so early and since God is mercifull these little ones may go to heaven. This is not for non- baptised adults. Certain things in the Church will never change (exDoctrine and Dogma) but some minor things can change (Liturgical Practise, etc.). The Pope and the Church have the power to do this because Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Church as he does the Pope. If Jesus gave us a sheppard for his flock 2000 years ago why would he not give us one now? God Bless

no pope in the world can declare that limbo be eliminated for anybody. i personally don't believe in limbo but i don't believe in hell or a heaven that is like the one the christains beleive in. in either case i don't understand how a man (which is the pope) can declare a place gone. isn't that gods job? i mean do you guys really follow someone who pretends to have the power of god to do this. no offense but know wonder you guys are so confused, following false prophets.

Limbo was a religious theory. It wasn't doctrine. The Pope has merely stated that this religious theory is now officially considered devoid of truth. That means they have now realized that there never was a limbo, despite considering it a POSSIBILITY for centuries.

Has he really eliminated Limbo, or just altered the teaching of Limbo?

What the Pope says doesn't really matter. There is no such thing as limbo for anyone. Jesus paid it all.

It eliminates limbo: period.
God bless
edit: thanks for the thumbs down. Let me clarify my answer. The Pope delcared the concept of limbo to be invalid. That means limbo is "eliminated" for E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E...past present and future.
Maybe I got the thumbs down from someone who gets really annoyed when people say "God bless". I hope so. God bless that person.
