We have a 1920's style Tudor colonial w/stucco that desperately needs new windows and a paint job. We are trying to figure out what kind of windows to put in that would keep the home's style, without breaking the entire bank, we aren't necessarily looking for the "cheapest" option. We have seen a couple of different window companies, renewal by anderson, trimline and alside were ones that we have all seen and have estimates for all 3. Anyone have any opinions either way on any of the three companies we have listed below.

Thanks!

Thank you for wanting to maintain the style of your home. Please don't put vinyl windows in it! There are many alternatives. Regarding the ones you mentioned: I don't know about Trimline; Alside sells vinyl; Renewal by Andersen is ridiculously priced.

If the frames of your existing windows are still in good shape (which they would have to be if you are considering replacement windows like Renewal, et.al., then you should consider using a sash replacement product such as the one available from Marvin Windows (Tilt-Pac) [ see www.marvin.com ]. Or, you could look at the wood insert replacement windows that include a frame, i.e. Marvin's Ultimate Double Hung Insert or Andersen's Woodright wood replacement windows.

If the frames of your existing windows are in bad shape (rotting, cracked, broken), then you will end up using a "new construction" window instead of a replacement window.

There are many options, but either company would be able to provide you with a solution. Look for an independent dealer in your area - not a big box merchant like Home Depot or Lowe's. Your project is beyond their capabilities.

I am not personally familiar with the company names that you have mentioned. However I can give you my opinion on the vinyl vs. wood window frames.
I got new windows in my nearly 60 year old house last year. I had the original windows (wood frames) replaced by vinyl. Of course they are still in fine shape, and I think that they will last so much longer than the old wood ones. There is no mildew, mold, rot, termite, pain chip, peeling or that sort of thing with these new ones. The wood ones that I replaced were just about falling out of the hole in the wall of the house from a lot of the above mentioned problems. Just my opinion...I like the vinyl. You will never have to paint them.

If you wish to maintain the so-called integrity of the so-called design, wood frame windows would be the best choice. It is what was used when the house was built. I bought Pella windows for my home. They were unfinished wood with aluminum cladding on the outside. The quality is excellent. They are 18 years old and look as good as new. They continue to be draft free. The outside aluminum can be painted.
