I went to my first NASCAR race this Saturday at Phoenix. It was pretty interesting and I look forward to going again. However, as a new fan, I couldn't get myself to stay interested for the entire 3 hours. As an experienced fan, what do you look for? What do you keep watching the whole time? What should I be focusing on to keep my attention?

Well, you picked a bad race for your first! That was one of the most boring races I have seen in a LOOONNNGGG time. There is usually more racing going on.
Anyway, personally I keep my eye on my favorite driver 100% and watch his progress.
Many just look for the spot where all the racing is happening. There is ALWAYS someone attepting to pass someone else. Look for the giant wad of cars!! You will either witness great racing or them all pile into each other in a cloud of smoke!

to tell you the truth, i have been a nascar fan since 2000, but it is hard for me to watch the whole race. I like matt kenseth, and if he is in the top 5 or 10, then it keeps me interested, but if he wrecks or something, i usually don't watch anymore of the race. What keeps my attention is if my driver is up near the front because i have a driver to follow. Nascar can get boring at times, especially at intermediate tracks because the cars can get so spread out that there is no action. I have been to one nascar race at richmond, and it is hard to sit still for that long.

I've tried getting a few friends of mine into the sport and usually I tell them to pick a driver so they have a car to focus on for the entire race. What happens is that they pick a driver, but then may get interested in another driver they see on the track and start rooting for him.

Also, talk to other NASCAR fans around and ask them why they root for the drivers they do. The race track is a perfect place for this. You might hear something that you like that may attract you to a driver.

Good for you! #1 - pick a driver and learn about him and his past. That way you have someone to root for and can focus on that action. Talk to the other fans - look at what crazy things people are wearing and/or doing - Nascar fans sure are a varied bunch - no redneck stereotype anymore - you can keep track of the bumps and wrecks. Lots of different things to see, do and hear.

Since you are a new fan I would suggest that you watch a couple more races and try to get yourself a favorite driver. When picking a favorite driver...look up information on whichever driver caught your eye. Learn more about him, his background, his driving style, his team, etc.

Once you have picked a favorite driver...then you really get into the races as you just have to know how your favorite driver is doing, if anyone has wrecked him, how many laps he's led, etc.

The funnest thing to me about NASCAR is going with friends. Get rivalries going. The Smack talk between you will make the time fly by. Wrecks always seem to help as well. If you are ADD, maybe the short tracks will be more interesting. Beer always helps. Have dun at the next one.

Did you get a scanner, or the fanview. If you didnt have it this time around give those a try next time they add so much more then just watching.

Or since you said you are a newer fan, try and find a driver you like or maybe a team like Roush, Hendrick, Gibbs and watch those cars.

Focus on your favorite driver. If/when you get bored, look at the cars in the front; it sometimes gets exciting when they're battling for the first place. When that doesn't amuse you anymore, look at where the most cars are...and maybe a wreck will happen. It's mean to say, but that's what some fans want...to see the car they hate wreck.

Personally I get a seat so I can view down pit road.I like to see the cars as they get into the pits.
Then I watch the various cars and not just focus on the leader.
