I recently made a protest against the hostility of the Gestapo Police spellers, And reading from your response to my letter it has been a valuable insight of information, regarding lack of patience, to the ordinary Factory worker, that lack Litural expertize, You may regard yourselves as highly intelligent Teachers, or office personal, who contribute to this web- site, To this I humbley bow to your superior knowledge, and take my leave,-------Incidently can any one of you strip a car down nut by nut, and put it all back together, or simply put together a Flat pack from a big store??

i have no idea what happened before, but i wouldn't worry about it...although you obviously are.

everyone has different gifts, and different qualities that make them unique..i happen to be a pretty good speller...although i make typos just like everyone else. and i rarely ever capitalize anything in yahoo answers, just because i am too lazy, lol....i know there are certain things that need capitalization, but it just doesnt bother me in general chit chat...everyone has their tics and pet peeves, and many people's pet peeves are spelling and grammar errors. one of mine happens to be rudeness and the constant need to correct people ;)

there is spellcheck, which you could have used, but by no means do you have to...

i don't know what they said when they corrected you, but i would guess that it was rude, based on your reply. there is no need for that, whatsoever...however, it can be difficult to read someone's message if it is poorly spelled...i have skipped over some people's questions just because i didnt want to try to decipher them, however, i dont correct them...if they wanted it correct, they could have done it themselves...so if they dont care, i shouldnt either - just my philosophy :)

perhaps they were trying to help others understand what you were saying?

also, just to get a different perspective....when someone brings you their car to fix, i assume you are a mechanic based on your questions about fixing cars...do you ever point out mistakes they make when they tried to fix it first. I can't imagine some of the stuff you have seen, lol.

just try to take it in stride...you can always just skip answers when you are reading them when you get a little ways in it and realize you are dealing with a Mr Correction :) That's what i would do.

Remember..they are YOUR 10 points to give :)

everyone has different strengths, i bet if someone had trouble with putting together a car you'd offer help? that is all they are trying to do (unless of course they are being obnoxious with it and then they deserve a slap)

i think i am an ok speller but anything else,i am rubbish! i don't even know how to drive a car, i mean no idea what so ever, the trick is to try and ignore them if they bother you.

but in some cases a mis spelt word can convey a completely different meaning and so if corrected, thank them not slate them.
and as for everyone who says use spell check, how can it work if you don't know how to spell the word in the first place? my dad uses it and as he doesn't know how to spell the word he sometimes picks the wrong suggestion

Hmmmmmm...................

I think thats how you spell it anyway!

My main problerm is my typing, I can spell really well, well not as good as I could 18 years ago but there you go, age and so forth etc.

My fingers seem to double in width and I hit all manner of keys and the result is often unreadable.

So.......Why admit to bad spelling when you can blame it on Mr Qwerty and his eccentricities.

As for cars, tractors motorcycles etc: I have stripped few down in my time any one with a bit of interest and flair for it can get along fairly well if they are prepared to have a go.
More importantly the sympathy for my bad typing over the net has led to me stripping down a few more interesting items over the years and enhancing my journey to that cold black oblivion that awaits us all whether spelt correctly or not.

So dont worry or fuss about it, nothing is really worth a jot unless you are enjoying it and being distracted from your eventual lonely fate. Such is our condition...damned if I understand it.

And.........

Some of my police colleagues spell worst than anyone I know so dont feel so bad.

First of all, I honestly must congratulate you for being able to strip a car down and everything...I know little to nothing about cars and am completely hopeless when something is wrong with it. (Even if I'm only 19)

Secondly, I'm one of those people that when I see bad spelling, it jumps out at me like a purple kangaroo sitting in the middle of a bunch of cows. However, I find it kind of rude to correct someone's spelling if I don't personally know them.

My point? Keep doing what you're doing. If they correct your spelling all the time, then let them. It just shows that they know a bit more about spelling or whatever. Who cares? Don't let it bother you, cuz it's just part of their nature.

As long as I can accurately identify what you're trying to communicate, spelling is of secondary importance to me.
use the Yahoo "check spelling" option...just a little extra effort will alleviate this problem....though, not all problems

Yes, I can strip my car down; but really prefer not to, unless it's absolutely necessary. LOL

Spelling is really a variable, ever-changing thing...what we now call the proper spelling..was not so years ago....here's a prime example: (note the v's and u's are opposite of today's spelling in most cases)

Bishop's Bible (1568)
1Ti 6:10 For loue of money, is the roote of all euyll, whiche whyle some lusted after, they erred from the fayth, & pearced the selues through with many sorowes.

Geneva Bible (1587)
1Ti 6:10 For the desire of money is the roote of all euill, which while some lusted after, they erred from the faith, and pearced themselues through with many sorowes.

Spell check hates the Bishop's and Geneva Bibles..LOL
but in reality they were spelled correctly for their time.

Even the original King James Version (1611) would be a spelling disaster for the literary Police....
1Ti 6:10 For the loue of money is the root of all euill, which while some coueted after, they haue erred from the faith, and pierced themselues through with many sorrowes.

Look at it this way: people have different skills. I happen to be a great speller BUT I am so deficient in math, it's not even funny.

I can proofread like nobody's business but I do not feel superior to people who have difficult using the correct spelling or grammar.

Let me say that I am the nut at the wheel and that's as far as my ability goes. Please don't be hard on yourself. Being a less than perfect speller doesn't make you a less than perfect human being.

Apples and oranges.
One can also be considerate enough to spell well and use good grammar, AND strip a car or put together a flat pack. They are not mutually exclusive.

I can do both, and am in uni as well. The difference is that I know my spelling and grammar isn't always the best, so I try not to be critical of others.
Besides, kindness counts more than anything in this life.

No need to be hostile. It is certainly not necessary for people to be rude about other people's spelling deficiencies. However, there's generally no good reason for "the ordinary factor worker" not being able to spell.

Dear Denis,
Spelling is important, for it is the correct spelling of a word that we take its meaning from. If I am to ask you how you would dismantle said car and put it back togther, if my words were mispelled you might miss the entire meaning of my question.
