# - think exes and ohhs. Also called number sign

* - is called the 'star' sign but in typing it is known as an asterisk.

When dialing *69 (in many locations), you will get the last number dialled to your phone read back to you by a computer voice for a fee.

# sign is used in circumstances where you are dialing an automated phone directory or switchboard.

# also refered to as number sign or the hash mark its actual name is an "octothorpe". It was given the "pound" nickname due to the lack of a symbol for British currency on a typewriter. The octothorpe was used in place of the normal stylized "L" to represent "pounds" when referring to British currency.
