Atheism is just supposed to be a belief in the absence of Deity, however I have noticed a definite huge dash of Skepticism in most Atheists attitudes. It seems that, even tho there is no reason why an Atheist could not be a believer in reincarnation, they seemed to have taken in Skepticism as part of the Atheist way, and rejected everything, with scientific acceptance of an idea as a requirement for their acceptance of it themselves.

Sad to see people that claim to be freethinkers, just exchanging one religion for another, except with their new religion just hiding inside a mantle of scientific hooey.

First, it's a sign of poor foresight that you would make an inflammatory comment like "Sad to see people that claim to be freethinkers, just exchanging one religion for another, except with their new religion just hiding inside a mantle of scientific hooey"...and then pretend you're just asking a question.

It seems to me that you aim to offend people, and then feign innocence when they come back at you. If your quote above was not your own, please be clearer in your post.

But to answer your question: thank you for recognizing that the meaning of "atheist" is relative.

To me, the word "atheist" refers to someone who believes there are no gods. In my mind, "atheism" is athe-ism, the "ism" of no god.

Other people consider an "atheist" to be anyone who does not subscribe to any particular belief in god. To them, "atheism" is a-theism, the lack of theism. My word for this kind of person is "agnostic".

One funny thing about defining "atheist" is that you probably need to start with an understanding of what "god" means--and my understanding of the word "god" might differ from the next person's. I tried briefly to define the concept of "god", but I used other words, like "sentient", "omnipotent", and "no tangible form", which need careful treatment in this area. Are the laws of nature sentient? Does sentience imply some form of communication, and if so, does beholding a cloud qualify?

I think atheists (of which I am one) don't believe in reincarnation because it can't be proven. I am extremely skeptical of anything which cannot be proven to me, such as all the psuedo sciences like tarot, astrology, psycics and most religions. When a god comes down and gives us world peace, cures all ills, stops all hunger and poverty, stops all violence, and the world is all fit and happy - then I will believe there is an all powerful, all loving god. Until that happens, I will believe that the sciences can generally prove their points to me with reasonable believability and logic. They are also not afraid to admit they may have been wrong and with more evidence and/or data revise their information, which is more than you can say for most religions!

Atheism is definitely the lack of belief in a deity but also the lack of belief in religion--which is why usually one who believes in reincarnation has a religion to go with it and therefore wouldn't be atheist. I guess it could be possible--but unlikely. Even if that person didn't believe in a certain religion--they'd likely be theist in thinking.

Reincarnation has to have a purpose. You are reincarnated until eventually you get it right and acheive Nirvana.

Atheist tend to disbelief just as much in a lack of deity as a lack of religious idealology. Which yes is frequently seen as skepticism, as that means "doubt or disbelief in religious tents". Most religions follow a deity so it stands to reason most who disbelieve in a deity would disbelieve in the religion that honors the deity.

Though I dont really understand the idea of skepticism. Isn't every religion skeptic of all the other religions?

But it my belief that skepticism "A doubting or questioning attitude or state of mind" or "Doubt or disbelief of religious tenets" is necessary before you disbelieve.

That seems to follow perfectly logically to me. And that has nothing to do with religion. However you mention these freethinkers to have exchanged one religion for another. However religion (n) is defined as

"1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
2. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship."

So therefore it would be impossible to have a "religion" (a belief in and reverence for a supernatural power regarded as governor of the universe" in "skepticism" (Doubt or disbelief of religious tenets)

That just doesn't make any sense logically when read--at least according to the American Heritage dictionary.

Skepticism leads to atheism. There are a few atheists that believe in reincarnation, but they are rare. The reason is the same lack of evidence that accompanies deities.

I don't see any reason to think that we are reincarnated. If you don't have measurable evidence of it, then it was probably just made up so that you could think that you don't REALLY have to die.

Going with the best available evidence is not a religion. Ignoring it is.

The reason for my belief in atheism is the logic behind the existence of god and the reason for religions. There are a lot of unknown in our lives. If we take the attitude that things are controlled by a god, or that we are just part of a war between god and devil, there is less meaning to lives than just to enjoy our existence on earth. Materials form and deteriate all the time. Our consciousness may exist just this one life time. For living things in the future, our current actions can affect them. So caring about the future is our meaning of existence. We just have a shorter priority which is caring for our family and friends first. I hope you see what I mean.

i do not have a believe that there are no gods or anything supernatural, i have a total lack of belief in them. a funny distinction, but a lack of belief is not a belief in itself. as far as gods and the supernatural are concerned it was not skepticism that led to my disbelief, it was incredulity: it just seemed like such a ridiculous idea. if i told you that an elephant was building a nest in a tree in my garden, you would not be skeptical if you disbelieved me. if feel the same way about gods and the supernatural. now the motivation behind some religious people and groups, (not all of them), i am deeply skeptical about, in the same way you are skeptical about the honesty of a used car dealer.

II heard Sam Harris say on an interview that he was open to the idea of reincarnation based on principals of Quantum
Physics.

I've heard other atheists say that they are open to a higher force like consciousness that some people may call god or the source of creation but not to a traditional or supernatural god.

I think Richard Dawkins even said in his The God Delusion book that he was referring to gods in a supernatural form.

Atheism is just the belief that there are no God or gods. It doesn't say that there isn't such a thing as reincarnation.

However, as most atheists tend to hold their views based upon evidence and probability, it is unlikely that many of them would go for reincarnation as a valid proposition.

Atheism simply is the disbelief in any deity or deities. That's it nothing more and nothing less. Atheists believe in mnay things just not in any God or gods and goddesses or goddess. Atheists don't claim science as a religion in any way shape or form. Anyway no two Atheists are the same in terms of how they think about things in life and in general.
