There are several different kinds of fertilizer. Natural, man made, and recycled. Natural is self explaintory, best explained by; cow poop. These deposits made from animals are collected and used by farmers and certain companies as fertilizer. Now, man made, is a reproduction of the cow patties. In short, naturaly occuring elements like nitrogen and sulfur. You will find those at a home improvement store. Recycled is simply that, while cutting your lawn do not bag the trimmings Let them be re-deposited back to the lawn to break down and be used as food. Most homeowners don't use that method because it also keeps the weed seeds in the lawn as well. All of this makes the plants grow!
As far as on animals it depends, most organic fertilizers are natural (poop), man made fertilizers will not harm them either. An average sized animal would have to ingest 4 times thier body weight for a reaction to occur with the man made fertilizers.
The best link would be lawn care companies e.g. TruGreen ChemLawn, Scott's Lawn Care, GroGreen. They all sell organic fertilizer. Hope that helped.

Fertilizer makes the plants grow better. And it comes from animals, at least the natural kind does.
