Why do Catholics accept that the Pope is infallible? Who decided that he was suddenly unable to make mistakes in proclaiming true doctrine. Was the Pope fallible before 1870 when the dogma was formed?

The Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible at closely defined times.

The Pope is only infallible when he, in union with the body of bishops, solemnly teaches that a doctrine as true.

This comes from the words of Jesus to Peter (the first Pope) and the Apostles (the first bishops), "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18) and "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16).

At all other times the Pope can be just as sinful as you and me and be in need of forgiveness

God bless,
Stanbo

The dogma was not "formed" in 1870. It was precisely defined at that time, to ensure that the belief was uniform and correct throughout the universal Church. But it was universally accepted ever since Jesus Christ decided that the visible head of His own Church must be able to define the truth infallibly, for otherwise there would be no possible way anyone on earth could know the truth, as clearly demonstrated by the thousands of conflicting, contradicting manmade denominations which futilely try to discover the truth for themselves by the unbiblical method of reading early Catholic writings and self-interpreting them. This is why Christ told the Apostle Simon, immediately after assigning to him the title "Peter" - "Rock", that he, Simon, would be the foundation upon which the true Church of Christ would be built. Jesus then immediately equipped Simon to serve in this capacity, giving him full authority (the keys to the kingdom) and the charism of infallibility (whatsoever you bind upon earth is bound in heaven). The result? Christ's Church, with the Vicar of Christ exercising doctrinal infallibility - 2,000 years of unity in belief, unity in teaching, unity in worship, just as Christ commanded (that they all may be ONE). Manmade denominational religion - 500 years of ongoing division, fragmentation and doctrinal chaos, in direct violation of Christ's command. God's plan really does work! And deviation from God's plan simply doesn't work.

The Pope decided he was infallible. Isn't that convenient?

I know, it's ridiculous. I heard that the catholic church have just decided that there's no such thing as purgatory which means babies can now go to heaven. I hope they've notified God that they've decided to change his mind for him. There never was such a thing as purgatory!

The Pope is the father of the AntiChrists or the leader if you wish. He takes the title of God and claims to be sinless.

The best part is that he's an elected official... that's like saying... "Hey... you can never be wrong again because we say so!"
